A new study on the impact of falls and breaks in older adults underscores the need for prevention: https://bit.ly/4fgS2NL. Dr. David Stapor, one of our orthopaedic surgeons, says that a fracture of a main bone like a hip or spine is like “a heart attack for the skeleton” that sets off a cascade of inflammation and trauma.

Dr. Marcia Klein-Patel, chair of the AHN Women’s Institute, was an early practitioner of what is now often referred to as midlife medicine — specializing in care for women through the second half of life that includes perimenopause, menopause and postmenopause. Listen to her talk about menopause and midlife medicine in this podcast: https://bit.ly/3SrmZFf Here are a few takeaways: ✔️ The AHN Women’s Institute includes menopause services as part of its full spectrum of care, including obstetrics, gynecology, gynecologic oncology, reproductive medicine, maternal-fetal medicine and urogynecology. ✔️ Dr. Klein-Patel points out that menopause is not “on” or “off” but rather a transition from perimenopause to menopause to postmenopause that typically takes about 10 years. ✔️ Eating well, sleeping well, exercising and having good relationships can help reduce most symptoms and make it easier to identify and do targeted interventions for any remaining symptoms. ✔️ She emphasizes that “menopause is not a disease,” and many women experience the menopause transition as a positive time in their lives. For the approximately 25% of women who struggle with the transition, the good news is that there are an array of effective treatments.

Sometimes we have to get creative to meet people where they are in their health care journeys. Our Center for Inclusion Health does exactly that by partnering with the Humane Animal Rescue of Pittsburgh on the Humane Health Coalition.
