About us
For 45 years, we have been a beacon of health and hope for communities worldwide, confronting pressing health challenges. Established in 1979, we are a health-focused humanitarian organization dedicated to responding to people affected by poverty, disaster, and inequity with life-changing health programs, medicine, and supplies. Our mission is to help people and communities access health in times of disaster and every day. We envision pathways to health and opportunity for all, driven by our commitment to sustainable solutions and treating people as they want to be treated. To date, we have provided over $20 billion in aid to 164 countries, including the US. We distribute over $900 million in medicine and supplies to 90 countries each year. Over the next five years, we aim to help 100 million people gain access to quality healthcare. Let’s make health happen for everyone, everywhere.

#EmergencyUpdate: Super Typhoon Carina stuck the #Philippines in late July bring torrential rains and extreme flooding. Americares is on the ground supporting communities with hygeine kits, fresh water, and replacement medical equipment to clinics that had been damaged during the storm. Floods are the most common natural disaster around the world. #ClimateChange has increased the risk of major flooding — even for areas previously less susceptible to extreme weather events. Already this year, severe and deadly floods have displaced hundreds of thousands of people in Brazil, Colombia, the Philippines, Tanzania and, in the United States. One year ago, devastating wildfires spurred by dry conditions and strong winds in the aftermath of Hurricane Dora, swept through the Hawaiian Islands, killing 97 people, causing major destruction and displacing thousands. In that time, #Americares has been able to support eight local organizations with medicine, supplies, emergency funding or technical assistance to help communities recover. In addition to these resources, we partnered with Heart to Heart International to donate a modular medical clinic to Project Vision Hawai'i, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to providing health care to individuals with significant access-to-care challenges. Over 1,100 patient have visited since it's opening, welcomed by a rotating team of volunteer nurses, nurse practitioners, doctors, mental health specialists, and traditional healing practitioners from Project Vision Hawaii. #SuperstormSandy2012: When Superstorm Sandy struck in 2012, bringing significant wind and flooding damage to the northeastern U.S. states, our team activated to meet the health needs of those affected. In the first 10 days, Americares provided emergency supplies to over 70,000 survivors. Mobile medical units were also set up outside damaged clinics in New York, allowing them to serve patients for over three months. Over the course of our response, Americares delivered $7.1 million in aid, reaching 450,000 people in need. #Haiti 2010: A powerful 7.0 magnitude earthquake strikes Port-au-Prince killing more than 230,000 and affecting 2 million more survivors. Buildings, roads and other critical infrastructure including many schools and health facilities are completely destroyed. Within 48 hours, #Americares is on the ground, aiding recovery efforts and bringing critical supplies to those in need. In just days, we airlifted $6 million in relief supplies, including life-saving medicines, to help survivors trapped in the rubble and chaos. Over the next 5 years, Americares would provide $86 million in aid, fill 3.5 million prescriptions, and partner with over 80 local organizations to create long-term, sustainable improvements by expanding health services, controlling cholera outbreaks, improving maternal and child health, and preparing for future disasters.
