About us
Twenty-four hours a day – seven days a week – 365 days a year, the more than 2,000 people of the Architect of the Capitol (AOC) serve the nation as proud stewards of some of the most iconic buildings and grounds in the world. Across the U.S. Capitol campus, architects, engineers and technicians design, enhance, and maintain new and historic structures, spaces, and building systems. Employees in various trades such as electricians, plumbers, masons, and carpenters maintain the facilities and infrastructure in optimal condition. Gardeners and grounds keepers create colorful displays and care for hundreds of acres of lawns and plantings. All of these efforts are directed at making the work of the Congress, the Supreme Court and Library of Congress – and the experience of the millions of visitors annually – as smooth, efficient and enjoyable as possible. Guides and Visitor Assistants at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center provide an exceptional experience for visitors to the nation's Capitol.

Pierre Charles L'Enfant (born #OTD 1754) famously wrote that he thought the elevated position selected for the #USCapitol was like "𝑎 𝑝𝑒𝑑𝑒𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑙 𝑤𝑎𝑖𝑡𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑎 𝑚𝑜𝑛𝑢𝑚𝑒𝑛𝑡." His likeness can be seen in multiple pieces of art in the building. More 🏛️ history: https://lnkd.in/eUbeJUt6

Where can you find the liberty cap (like #Phryge) in U.S. Capitol art? The Senate pediment, the House bronze doors, "Westward the Course of Empire Takes Its Way" and early marble mantel pieces, just to name a few. Artist Constantino Brumidi (born #OTD 1805) placed a figure with the red cap in several locations of the #USCapitol including the Brumidi Corridors, the Senate Reception Room, the President's Room and the Rotunda. DYK the #SenateParks fountain consists of three separate components? 1) The main basin, a hexagonal granite monolith with high jets of water spouting from its center, is surrounded by six smaller jets on a lower level. Lion-head spouts on the faces of the hexagon project streams of water into a large circular basin with a scalloped stone rim, over which the water spills into a larger oval basin. The hexagon is 25 feet across and the basin measures 85 feet by 100 feet. 2) From the oval basin the water is piped underground to three sculpted stone bubbler fountains in the north wall of the terrace. The scalloped rims of their tiered basins repeat the pattern of the large fountain above. 3) From there the water is again piped underground to the lower level of the 180-foot-by-80-foot reflecting pool. The fountain was designed by architects Bennett, Parsons and Frost and built under the direction of Architect of the Capitol David Lynn. It operated for the first time #OTD 1932.

"I was honored to be sworn in as the 13th Architect of the Capitol by Chief Justice John Roberts on June 24, 2024. I want to thank Chief Justice Roberts for taking the time to do the ceremony and for his kind words to me and my family. A huge thank you also to the Supreme Court Marshal and her staff that hosted the ceremony and made the day a very special memory for all of us." – 𝑇ℎ𝑜𝑚𝑎𝑠 𝐸.
