Our system is not broken. Each year, we are moving closer to our goal of 50,000 annual organs transplanted in 2026, and we must continue our efforts to support this growth. AOPO President Dorrie D. says it perfectly: “Failing systems do not have 13 record-breaking years in a row. They do not facilitate 128 organ transplants every day. And they do not provide life-saving gifts to almost 40,000 people last year.” Watch the full AOPO President’s Address on YouTube: https://lnkd.in/eMB8akX7

The U.S. organ donation and transplantation system is undergoing a lot of transformation. AOPO President Dorrie D. recently spoke with the New Hampshire Bulletin about efforts by CMS to assess OPO performance and underscored the challenges of capturing an OPO’s complex work. She highlighted the rise in organ non-utilization, which affects an OPO's standing and ultimately hinders donation and the saving of lives through transplantation. “When we have to go back to a donor family, a grieving donor family, and thank them for the gifts that they’ve given and report that sadly, we were unable to use them, that is a tragedy,” Dils said. “It’s also a tragedy for the people who die waiting for an organ transplant in the United States. And somehow, we need to create regulations that improve the entire ecosystem, not just one part of it.” Thank you, Annmarie Timmins, for the opportunity to discuss OPO reforms and the future of donation. In Dorrie D.’ AOPO President’s Address, she emphasizes the vital role of Organ Procurement Organizations (OPOs) in advancing the organ donation process and their relentless, mission-driven efforts to ensure every donation opportunity results in lives saved. Dorrie’s important reminder: “I want to first say, I know we need to do more, we need to keep pushing and striving, and I know everyone in this room agrees with that. No one wants a patient to die waiting for an organ transplant. But we are not failing – we are not the enemy – despite what has been said and written about us. As I mentioned, I have spent my entire career in this field, and I’ve been privileged to meet and work beside so many incredibly dedicated and selfless people who have literally given their lives to this cause.” Get ready! Dorrie’s full address is coming out tomorrow. #AOPOAM24 #AOPO50K

Continuing a two-part series on normothermic regional perfusion (NRP), NPR Health Correspondent Rob Stein gave listeners an unprecedented look inside an operating room with Tennessee Donor Services (TDS) to help audiences understand a new organ recovery procedure that holds the promise of saving more lives. In addition to sharing how NRP improves transplantation outcomes, Stein showcases the professionalism and devotion of OPOs like TDS as they recover as many organs as possible, often overcoming difficult challenges to do so.
