It might sound hard to believe, but there was a time when the advent of cars was shunned for being too dangerous for society. It took years for humans to adjust to cars as a new form of technology, outweigh their risks with benefits, and integrate them into society. So, knowing that the internet is here to stay, how can parents adapt to its risks and protect their child’s mental health? On this week’s episode of the Digital Parenthood Digest, Aura Founder & CEO Hari Ravichandran sat down with Dr Alfiee Breland-Noble, Dave Anderson, and Aliza Pressman, Ph.D. to discuss how we can improve kids’ online safety to protect their long-term mental health. Special thanks to Child Mind Institute and The AAKOMA Project, Inc. “My 12-year-old is smart and does well in school, so he gets bored easily. He used to come home from school and just sit on his phone. He'd easily be on it for 20 hours or play a video game for 16 hours straight, which flabbergasted me.” Aura customer Bill Safcik recently sat down with Business Insider’s Charissa Cheong to talk about the flabbergasting reality of raising connected kids. How do we keep children who grow up with screens rooted in reality? Turns out this responsibility isn’t just on parents — the platforms themselves also need to step up. In honor of the Kids Online Safety Act being passed by the Senate this week, today's episode of Digital Parenthood Digest tackles Building a Better Internet for Kids. This panel features Nilay Patel, Dr. Michael Rich, Emma Lembke, Viraj Doshi, and Michael Preston as they discuss how social media platforms can improve online experiences for kids growing up with screens. Special thanks to The Verge, Digital Wellness Lab, LOG OFF Movement, Snap Inc., and Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop. Keeping kids safe online is a crucial ongoing conversation, especially among parents. Today at 1pm EST, Aura CMO Kristin Covi and SOSA — Safe from Online Sex Abuse founder Roo Powell discuss all things online safety live on Instagram. You don't want to miss it!
The first bill to protect children online since 1998 was passed today by the senate. Known as the Kids Online Safety Act, this historical bill creates a "duty of care" requiring online platforms to "take reasonable steps to prevent harm". This is an important first step toward becoming law, but its just the first mile of a marathon. While we continue to champion KOSA, we are providing resources for parents right now, because protecting your kids online cannot wait. Visit digitalparenthood.com for expert advice, education, and resources.
If you're waiting for a pat on the back from your kids, you're probably going to be waiting for a long time. A huge thank you to Dr. Becky Kennedy for her invaluable insight on making decisions for our children at the inaugural #digitalparenthoodsummit last month!
