I am thrilled to announce that Miami Dade College's Cultural Affairs Department is embarking on a groundbreaking digital transformation, thanks to a historic $2 million grant from the Knight Foundation! This initiative will elevate MDC's signature cultural programs – including Miami Book Fair , Miami Film Festival, The Koubek Center, Mdc Museum of Art + Design (MOAD), and Live Arts Miami – enhancing our tech capabilities and expanding our community engagement. Powered by the generous investment from the Knight Foundation, our digital transformation will allow us to modernize and consolidate our technology infrastructure, enhance our customer relationship management systems, and cultivate a data-driven culture. Our aim is to enrich Miami’s cultural landscape by making arts and culture more accessible and engaging for everyone. This achievement would not be possible without the support of a great team of visionary and experienced individuals and organizations. A heartfelt thank you to Jennifer Farah, Victoria Rogers and the Knight Foundation team at large for their sustained partnership and generosity. To our MDC Cultural Affairs Department and its team leaders--Lissette Mendez, Kathryn García, James Woolley, Melissa Messulam and Amy Galpin--for their longstanding trajectory of success and the leadership to bring this project to fruition. Balboa Park Online Collaborative hosted a new episode of our Dreaming of a New Collections Management System webinar series with Objects and Order and its founders Christina Aube and Jason T.. Christa and Jason introduced their MOON object system, a flexible and customizable collections management system designed to complement existing systems. They demonstrated many of its features, including the ability to add and update different types of objects, upload and view media, create custom modules, and publish collections online. The system's cloud-based nature, user permissions, and tech stack were also discussed, with plans for upcoming AI enhancements and new modules. The Kaish Family Archive Project is seeking a skilled Digitization and Digital Asset Manager with expertise in the handling and digitization of artwork and archival materials. Reporting to the Director and working closely and collaboratively with colleagues and the artist in an artists’ studio environment, the ideal candidate will have experience in photographing artwork, scanning archival materials, and managing digital assets within a digital asset management system. They will play a pivotal role in organizing, preserving, and optimizing access to the archive's valuable digital assets. This job posting is open until July 19th. ICYMI: As part of our ‘Dreaming of AI’ series, we invited Dr. James Hutson to present on Revolutionizing Cultural Heritage: XR and Generative AI for Inclusive Engagement. Dr. Hutson did a deep dive into case studies of extended reality and generative AI in cultural heritage settings where he discussed the evolution of virtual reality and immersive technologies, the use of AI in recreating cultural heritage sites, and the potential of generative AI in various fields, including real-time translation and language preservation. He also highlighted the complexities of historical narratives, the importance of recording and preserving endangered languages and cultural artifacts, and the digital museum concept.
