All eyes are on Paris as the 2024 Olympics closing ceremony takes place today. But, did you know about the hidden gem beneath the city's iconic streets? A vast geothermal reservoir that provides low-energy heating to over 250,000 homes and even the Orly airport. Researchers from New Zealand's University of Auckland, in collaboration with the #geothermal consulting company Geofluid, used advanced modeling techniques to create a detailed picture of the reservoirs to optimize this renewable energy source. The team used Bentley software to build a geological model that helps understand pressure and temperature changes within the reservoir. This visualization tool is helping ensure sustainable management of the geothermal basin, contributing to Paris's zero-carbon heating goals. #energy #engineering #infrastructure #subsurface #geological #GeothermalEnergy #sustainability #Paris #Seequent

Truck manufacturer SCANIA is making important contributions to the transition towards safer, more efficient and sustainable transportation. Check out this test track, which is used to develop and test electric and autonomous technology for heavy vehicles. It has 19 kilometers of roads with more than 60 intersections and junctions. SCANIA hired AFRY to design the test area amid an 85-hectare facility in Södertälje, Sweden. The track will include a three-lane, high-speed oval vehicle test section, a mixed traffic area for simulating varying road conditions, a multifunction brake test area, and service areas for servicing, parking, and charging vehicles. The plan is to complete the facility by 2026. With the help of Bentley software, AFRY used 3D modeling to efficiently design the project, as changing any single element would impact numerous others. Detailed 3D models enriched with project data enabled them to verify the impact of design on the environment and calculate the amount of earthwork required. In the process, AFRY reduced the environmental footprint of the test track while providing long-term assistance with the development of vital, emission-free vehicle technology. #engineering #technology #infrastructure #roads #transportation

The Xi’an-Shiyan high-speed railway project is a 256-kilometer railway that will strengthen the connection between city clusters in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River to help revitalize rural areas and alleviate poverty. One of the “six longitudinal lines and four horizontal lines” planned for the railway network of Hubei Province, the project is part of China’s plans to expand its high-speed network to 50,000km by 2025. Once completed, it will form a channel from Wuhan to Xi’an, reducing travel time between the two cities to about 2 hours. #transportation #rail #railway #digitaltwin #china

California's EchoWater megaproject tackled Sacramento Valley's water scarcity by upgrading a wastewater treatment facility. In 2022, amidst a multi-year drought, the state recorded one of its driest years ever. 600 square miles of farmland in the valley had to be left fallow — with no crops planted — due to low water levels. The completion of this massive undertaking involved upgrading infrastructure to treat 135 million gallons of wastewater daily, ensuring a safe and reliable supply of water. Using Bentley software, engineering firm Project Controls Cube meticulously planned and managed 22 individual construction and design projects. The team created a digital twin of the EchoWater facility to prepare for and carry out all the tasks, identifying problems in advance and working in real time. This allowed them to complete the billion-dollar project on time and under budget, saving taxpayers $400 million (USD). EchoWater promises to revitalize the region’s water supply, including waterways and groundwaters. [Images: Aerial view of farmland, rivers, and landscape around Sacramento. Gear up for a transportation revolution under the Baltic Sea! The Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link is set to be the world's longest combined road and rail tunnel connecting Denmark and Germany when it opens in 2029. The tunnel will be constructed in massive 73,000-ton sections, each roughly half the length of the world's biggest container ship. These sections will be carefully positioned under the seabed, creating a new route for cars, trains, and freight. Once complete, travel times between Copenhagen and Hamburg is expected to be just 2.5 hours by train, compared to 4.5 hours today. Dive into this CNN article to learn more about the engineering and construction behind this marvel! https://cnn.it/3RPUpNE #engineering #infrastructure #construction #rail #denmark #germany #europe
