This week we’ve been raising awareness around misdiagnosed diabetes in adults. One way to prevent a misdiagnosis is through autoantibody testing which is used at diagnosis to accurately classify the diabetes type. Positive autoantibodies = autoimmune = type 1 diabetes. If you are an adult who has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and you aren’t responding to the prescribed therapy, ask your doctor to order autoantibodies to rule out T1D. Thank you, Lance Bass for sharing your diagnosis and experience being misdiagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Misdiagnosis is an all-too-common problem that can have tragic consequences and happens more often in adults due to misconceptions that T1D – in all forms – is a “juvenile” condition. "The sudden loss of my father to DKA and my younger brother's T1D diagnosis brought my family face-to-face with uncertainty. However, as we learned about diabetes devices and treatments to help manage the disease, we discovered a renewed sense of peace and hope. With more research, we believe we can ultimately end this disease." – Orlando Brown, Jr., NFL Cincinnati Bengals Here's to a champion on and off the field!
