CalMatters is hitting a milestone as we enter our 10th year of advancing California through free, independent and impactful journalism. In 2015, not enough journalists were keeping a watchful eye on our elected leaders. That’s why co-founders Dave Lesher, Simone Coxe and Chris Boskin set out to build a new model for California news. It’s working. Today, CalMatters’ independent and unbiased news holds the powerful to account, provides millions of Californians with trusted information, and inspires transformational impact. “I am proud of what CalMatters’ journalism has already done: informing 1 in 5 voters in an election, calling out the truth in hard-hitting investigations, and engaging the community every day on core quality-of-life issues,” said CalMatters CEO Neil Chase. Learn more about some of our plans for this milestone year: https://cal.news/3ylbicu And as our anniversary drive comes to a close, there’s no better time to give. Since December, we've written 32 stories and recorded 10 radio pieces and five TV spots using CalMatters new Digital Democracy database. I've named roughly 75 legislators in my stories. Pretty cool! Having an absolute blast using this new AI-backed system. If you're interested in seeing the sorts of journalism we've been doing, scroll through my story list. And please hit me up if you're a California reporter and you're interested in using this system to find unique stories about your local lawmakers.

Excited to be back in Sacramento, in the 2nd year of supporting youth journalism with CalMatters. This week, 40 fellows gather to collaborate and learn from journalists and veteran teachers before returning to their schools' newsrooms. Thanks to Paul Kandell for kicking us off with his expert advice on building and growing scholastic media programs. And thank you, teachers, for shaping the future of journalism! #JournalismEducation #YouthJournalism #Sacramento #JEF @MichaelLozano

This week, I published another piece with CalMatters addressing the issues unbanked and underbanked Californians face as society becomes more and more cashless. Read it here:
For 'unbanked' Californians, cash is still king in an increasingly cashless society

Had so much fun shooting and editing this video with Robert Meeks for SoCalPBS and CalMatters on the Imperial Beach sewage situation. Once a world-class surfing destination, Imperial Beach is now plagued by pollution. Over the past five years, over 100 billion gallons of raw sewage have washed in from Tijuana, severely damaging the small beach town's reputation and environment and prompting residents to dub it "one of the stinkiest beaches in the U.S." Learn more at https://bit.ly/3NNzJ4T

California has lost one-third of its newspapers since 2005, according to a 2023 Northwestern Medill School of Journalism report. The number of journalists in the state has dropped 68% since then, and despite shifting efforts to digital, news outlets are struggling to attract readers and subscribers. https://lnkd.in/gzn4F4wu.

"Companies showed this is the way to repeal what the Legislature does: using an expensive, well-financed campaign to deny worker rights," said William Gould, former chair of the National Labor Relations Board, in response to today's California Supreme Court ruling, which lets the gig-industry financed, voter-approved Prop. 22 stand. #gigwork #gigworkers #gigeconomy #uber #lyft #doordash #labor #californiasupremecourt

NEW: As California Gov. Gavin Newsom signs an order advising cities to plan for widespread homeless encampment removals, what's happening in shelters offered as an alternative? A CalMatters investigation reveals records of sexual assaults, bedbugs, food shortages, even a child falling out a window — all part of a nagging lack of state oversight. https://lnkd.in/ga_XsNEy
