We’re excited to have hosted an inspiring international symposium in Costa Rica on "Healthy Taxes for Tobacco Control." Panelists included representatives from civil society groups, academia, and international organizations including the Pan American Health Organization, the ORGANIZATION FOR ECONOMIC COOPERATION AND DEVELOPMENT, The World Bank, and top universities like Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez, and Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Attendees shared insights on how effective tobacco tax laws can drastically cut smoking rates and enhance public health. Legislators, policymakers, and the press were all in on the conversation, making it a truly engaging and impactful event.

We applaud Mike Bloomberg and Bloomberg Philanthropies for their incredible leadership in working to create a healthier and more equitable future for all. This gift will improve health today and for generations to come.
Entrepreneur, philanthropist, UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy for Climate Ambition & Solutions, WHO Global Ambassador for Noncommunicable Diseases and Injuries, mayor of NYC, father, grandfather, and data nerd.
We have much more to do to build a country where every person, regardless of race, has equal access to quality health care. Bloomberg Philanthropies’ gift to the country’s four historically Black medical schools is an investment in these vital institutions, in new generations of Black doctors, and in a healthier and more equitable future. https://lnkd.in/ehMehmj3

The impact of the overdose crisis on Black communities is profound and often underreported. Thank you to the Congressional Black Caucus for raising awareness in its Broadsheet Magazine this month. Our President and CEO Yolonda Richardson authored this article which not only sheds light on an urgent problem but also fosters a dialogue that is essential for meaningful change, especially when it comes to mental health. The Congressional Black Caucus' dedication to addressing mental health and substance use challenges within our communities is commendable. This piece is vital in advocating for more resources, support and awareness, and it will undoubtedly inspire many to take action. Let’s continue to work together to support those affected and strive for a healthier, more equitable future. #MentalHealthAwareness #OverdoseCrisis #CommunitySupport #CongressionalBlackCaucus #PublicHealth

📢Breaking news: Indonesian President Joko Widodo has signed important tobacco control regulations mandating much-needed measures to curb tobacco use in a country with some of the highest smoking rates in the world. The regulations require: restrictions on tobacco and e-cigarette marketing; large, pictorial warning labels on tobacco products; and bans on the sale of tobacco and e-cigarettes near schools and playgrounds. New restrictions on social media sales and advertising and a ban on the sale of single sticks – two tactics aggressively used by tobacco companies to addict youth – are also included in the regulations. We urge the government to act quickly and strongly to implement the regulations in the face of interference from tobacco companies that will surely continue. The new regulations represent an urgently needed step forward for Indonesians and advocates who have championed them for over a decade. Advocates from across Indonesia worked tirelessly to ensure that Big Tobacco companies could not derail these desperately needed public health measures. 🚭 Our statement: https://lnkd.in/e4XJrecU

I had the honor of representing the Tobacco-Free Kids Action Fund at the Boao Forum for Asia. This gathering brought together governments, civil society groups, businesses, and academic institutions to chart a course for a healthier future. I participated in two panel discussions. During the first, "Achieving Health for All - Health Promotion and Sustainable Development," I underscored the significance of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) and the comprehensive implementation of the World Health Organization’s MPOWER measures to effectively reduce tobacco consumption and smoking rates. The second panel, “Theory and Practice of Integrating Health Concepts into City Governance,” allowed me to share New York City's experiences in building a healthy city and implementing health policies that contribute to increased life expectancy. Engaging with and learning from this diverse group of global health leaders was inspiring. The exchange of ideas and best practices has reinforced my belief that, together, we can achieve a future where every nation prioritizes the health and well-being of its citizens.

The introduction of so-called “smart vapes” couldn’t be dumber. E-cigarette makers have started selling illegal products with video games and other smartphone features “so clearly geared toward young people,” researchers report. The FDA must act now to take these and every other illegal product off the market.
