ICYMI: CDT’s Becca Branum argues in a recent blog post that the recent #SCOTUS ruling in Moody v. #NetChoice settles little on platform #transparency. The ruling affirms that the #FirstAmendment protects online content moderation as expressive activity. While the decision remands some transparency requirements for further consideration, it highlights the delicate balance needed to avoid undue burdens on free speech. https://lnkd.in/ecXYXWT6

Concerns about the impact of social media and messaging on teens’ mental health continue, but research reveals a complex picture. The challenge? Determining the most effective protective measures. CDT’s “More Tools, More Control” has some recommendations. Our study delved into the experiences of U.S. teens & young adults w/ direct messaging. Findings highlight the prevalence of unwanted content as well as the proactive strategies young people use to navigate online risks. To protect young users, platforms must provide basic tools like blocking and reporting, default private settings, & educational notices. Empowering teens with control and knowledge is key to fostering safer online environments without stifling their freedom. https://lnkd.in/eY_vnC-7

CDT's Senior Technologist Hannah Quay-de la Vallee in CalMatters discussing the pressures of educators to adopt #AI and the need for educators to engage in “critical analysis” before bringing #AI to the classroom. “Staff shortfalls, techno-optimism, a desire to be on the cutting edge and a fear of missing out all push educators to adopt AI, said [CDT’s] Quay-de la Vallee.” “[Quay-de la Vallee] thinks recent events [show] that more education leaders need to engage in critical analysis before bringing AI tools into classrooms… whether a particular AI tool deserves more scrutiny depends on how it’s used & risk that use poses to students:” “Some forms of #AI, like the kind used for grading and predicting if a student will drop out of school, [Quay-de la Vallee] said, deserve high risk labels.” “Quay-de la Vallee suggested that educators work with organizations that vet and certify education technology tools such as Project Unicorn, a nonprofit that evaluates edtech products.” https://lnkd.in/eBnqrY5f
