Embedded payroll is by far the fastest growing add-on financial product for SaaS platforms 🤯. In just two years adoption has grown from 0 to 10%, and it's still just getting started. I like to think I know this space pretty well (we created it at Check after all) but these numbers caught me by surprise. Payments has been a tidal wave for 15+ years now, and is still only attached at ~50%. To see platforms hit 10% payroll penetration so quickly is wild, and shows just how much pain SMBs feel with legacy payroll providers. I'm calling it now: in 10 years payroll is going to be the highest attach add-on product for platforms. If you're a founder running a vertical or SMB SaaS business I think there are two takeaways: 1. Your customers are looking for new, better ways to pay their team. 2. It's not too late. Unlike in payments, lending, and other verticals you still have the opportunity to be an early mover in payroll. But your competitors are paying attention too. You don't want to be last. We're back with another new hire spotlight! Kevin Wright started with Check this summer as an Engineering Manager. Here's what he had to say about joining the team: "I'm excited to join Check as an Engineering Manager on our Payroll Pod! I spent the last 7+ years of my career at an online used car marketplace. I loved the technical challenges of simplifying an operationally and regulatory complex business, as well as the human challenges of helping engineers grow and building mature teams. Check gives me the opportunity to double down on both of these. Payroll is orders of magnitude more complex. We calculate thousands of taxes across hundreds of jurisdictions and keep up with ever-changing legislation and regulations. Each of us on the team has an opportunity to have a huge impact." Year-end might be the last thing on the minds of most payroll professionals and business owners in the middle of the summer, but Jim Kohl argues that this is the best time to start preparing. Take a look at our new blog on how to use the downtime that comes with summer to set yourself up for success.

We are teaming up with Clair to bring Earned Wage Access to our partners and their customers. We’re thrilled to support employees getting paid through Check’s partner platforms to get the flexibility to get access to their wages sooner. Our Head of Product Ian Zapolsky writes about the history of payday lending and the significance of Earned Wage Access (EWA) in a new blog post. EWA allows workers to access their accrued wages before their next paycheck and is game-changing for the many Americans who live paycheck to paycheck. If there’s one thing we know for sure, it’s that embedded finance and embedded payroll are the future. Andrew Brown was at Collision Conf this week to discuss the expansion and opportunity of embedded finance alongside Ravi Adusumilli of Airwallex, Laura Spiekerman of Alloy, and Anne Gaviola of Global News.
Earlier this week I had the privilege of speaking at Collision Conf along with Laura Spiekerman from Alloy and Ravi Adusumilli from Airwallex on how embedded fintech is reshaping the landscape for SMBs. My takeaway is that we've entered a new era of innovation for embedded finance. It's no longer just about payments, which are now so ubiquitous that we don't even think of them as embedded. In 10 years the same is going to be true for additional financial services like payroll, insurance, and lending. "Embedded" is just going to be the way payroll works, and it's going to seem almost inconceivable that it ever worked another way.

We love seeing Check partners listed in the 50 emerging vSaaS companies! Congratulations 🎉
Today, Bain Capital Ventures and Headline recognize 50 emerging vertical SaaS companies with our second annual Vertical SaaS 50! 🏭 We continue to see founders building in fragmented industries that are heavily document based: Once again, we had strong company representation in architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) with the likes of BuildVision, Trayd, Trunk Tools and XBuild, as well as in logistics, with Axle, Boon, Cargado and Pallet. This year, we saw more companies building in professional services with Eve, Garden, and Materia AI, financial services with Rogo and Zocks, and government with Forage and Polimorphic. ✨ Advancements in AI have unsurprisingly unlocked many vertical SaaS capabilities: Companies like Bolo AI offer an AI-powered knowledge platform for oil & gas, MagicSchool AI provides K-12 teachers with a co-pilot and Norm Ai uses AI agents to take care of regulatory compliance. Taylor Brandt and I are excited to hear from you! If you are building a vertical SaaS company or have recommendations for our 2025 list please reach out to us directly.
