🌿🦉 This week, our Children’s Aid Goodhue Community Center was featured on Spectrum NY1! Summer campers are diving into the world of birding, thanks to the guidance of Anthony Ciancimino, a passionate birder and science program director. Each week, our campers explore the woodlands, documenting the diverse bird species like house finches, barn swallows, and the elusive Louisiana waterthrush. This educational adventure teaches them about birds, bugs, and plants and instills mindfulness and patience. It's all part of our mission to provide enriching, fun summer experiences! #ChildrensAidNYC #GoodhueCenter #Birding #SummerCamp

The summer can be a difficult time for youth in NYC. Boredom sets in and without the daily structure of school, young people don’t have spaces to learn and connect. Luckily, in the coming weeks, some New York City summer youth programs will be staying open later in the evening. At Children's Aid, we know the importance of providing comprehensive and accommodating programming for students — summertime is no exception. Thanks to our partners and city officials for prioritizing the support our youth deserve when school is out of session. 📣Exciting news from the Children’s Aid team; we recently submitted to the SXSW EDU PanelPicker! But for us to take the stage next spring in Austin, we need your support. The rate of chronic absenteeism has nearly doubled following the pandemic. Community schools are on the frontlines of this issue, providing holistic and personalized service for students and parents. Our panel, “Solving Absenteeism: Community Schools Can Help,” will dive further into this topic, featuring our own Phoebe Boyer as a moderator. Panelists will include Hedy Chang, Founder and Executive Director of Attendance Works, Abraham Olivares, Principal at Fresno Unified School District, and Abe Fernández, Vice President of Collective Impact and Director of National Center for Community Schools. They will share their firsthand perspective on the high levels of chronic absenteeism we are seeing in schools nationwide and how community schools offer impactful and lasting solutions. Voting will close on August 18th so help us bring this important conversation to life and cast your vote TODAY: https://lnkd.in/eZWn-gKh

Happy International Lifeguard Appreciation Day! Today, we honor our incredible lifeguards at Children’s Aid.🏊♀️ In 2022, several NYC pools faced closures due to a lifeguard shortage, disproportionately affecting children in communities of color. The Citywide Lifeguard & Aquatics Taskforce, including city agencies and nonprofits like Children’s Aid, stepped in to create access and address swim safety. Big thanks to our exceptional lifeguards Jerry Moret, Dexter Tucker, Jordan Lane, Semia McGhie, Kiani Foster, Aaron Guzman, Chris McNamara, and many more for keeping our waters and centers as a safe haven. #InternationalLifeguardAppreciationDay #SwimSafety #ChildrensAidNYC #CitywideLifeguardandAquaticsTaskforce

Congratulations to our President and CEO at Children's Aid, Phoebe Boyer, for her insightful Op-Ed on chronic absenteeism featured in The 74 Media. Phoebe’s article highlights the urgent need to address this educational crisis, which affects nearly 16 million students. Our community schools are leading the charge with innovative solutions, from providing laundry services to implementing success mentor programs. These holistic support systems are making a tangible difference, significantly boosting attendance rates. By addressing the personal barriers students face, we’re creating an environment where every child can thrive. Let’s continue to explore and implement creative strategies to ensure all students have the resources they need to succeed. #FBF to our 2023 #ChildrensAidBenefit with keynote speaker and #ChildrensAidNYC alum, Emmanuel Ferreiras: “It’s not hard to imagine where I would be if I hadn’t come to Children’s Aid. There are plenty of children who don’t ask for help or never see that help is being offered.
