As the Olympic games conclude this weekend, and with the Paralympic Games starting later this month, we celebrate past accomplishments of Kara Ayers, PhD, our associate director of UCEDD, Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics! She had a life-changing experience leading up to and competing in the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens as part of the first group of Paralympians who received the same resources and support from the US Olympic Committee as the Olympians. Kara finished ninth in the 100-meter breaststroke, setting two American records in the process. Outside of the 2004 games, Kara was also a world record holder at one time in the 200-meter breaststroke; and then retired from competitive swimming after the 2005 World Championships to focus on finishing her PhD program. She now focuses her research on health equity and people with disabilities, and shares how fortunate she feels to live in Cincinnati because there are a large number of strong adaptive sports programs locally for people with disabilities. #WeAreCincyKids

Our Pectus Excavatum Enhanced Recovery Team treats pre- and post-surgical pectus excavatum patients. Pectus excavatum is a depression caused when the sternum (breastbone) is abnormally pushed inward due to cartilage growth that attaches the sternum to the ribs. In severe cases, surgery might be needed to correct the condition. Our Enhanced Recovery Team works with patients who are undergoing the Nuss Procedure through our Chest Wall Center. The Nuss Procedure is a minimally invasive surgical technique to correct pectus excavatum, and our recovery team is made up of specially trained physical therapists who work closely with both the Chest Wall Center and our patients. They work to evaluate underlying strength, flexibility, endurance, and postural deficits. After surgery, they begin strengthening quickly to allow return to normal activities. Their skill and care for our patients is why they are this week's #FridayFeature! Learn more about pectus excavatum and our Chest Wall Center: https://lnkd.in/g6j7Jifm

We have the best patients – they deserve the best experience. Our Patient and Family Experience team is made up of advocates who champion a culture at Cincinnati Children’s that strives for the very best patient and family experience every time. They do this by listening to patients and their families, and then translating what they say into actionable steps and insights for teams across the health system. That’s why this week, we are proud to recognize them as our #FridayFeature! The team is always working to make the hospital experience more inviting – next week, they are planning to celebrate the Olympic Games throughout the health system!
