The Cleveland Guardians are profoundly saddened by the loss of an extraordinary ally and leader, Billy Bean, MLB’s Senior Vice President for Diversity, Equity & Inclusion and Special Assistant to the Commissioner. Billy's impressive Major League Baseball (MLB) playing career from 1987-1995 with the Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Dodgers, and San Diego Padres was just the beginning of his influential journey in baseball. In 2014, he joined the Office of the Commissioner as MLB’s first-ever Ambassador for Inclusion after courageously coming out as the second openly gay former MLB player. In his senior advisory role to Commissioner Manfred, Billy championed player education, LGBTQ inclusion, and social justice initiatives. He tirelessly worked with MLB’s 30 Clubs to advance equality for all players, coaches, managers, umpires, employees, and stakeholders, striving to create an equitable, inclusive, and supportive workplace for everyone in the baseball community. We had the honor of hosting Billy in Cleveland during the 2019 All-Star weekend, where he led an intimate and impactful discussion with our Front Office on the critical importance of inclusion in sports. Since then, Billy has been an unwavering advocate for change in Cleveland, partnering closely with our DEI Team to provide invaluable support and guidance from MLB League Officers. Billy had a unique ability to inspire and uplift everyone around him. He transformed his personal struggles into a beacon of hope and meaning for those he encountered. His instrumental role in establishing our first-ever Pride Night at Progressive Field is just one testament to his dedication. Billy was always available for a call, offering his guidance and wisdom whenever needed. "Billy's humor, charm, and relentless advocacy will be deeply missed here in Cleveland," said Matthew Grimes, Ed.M, Head of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. "He was more than a leader; he was a friend who made everyone better." We will forever cherish Billy’s legacy and strive to uphold the values he so passionately promoted.
