In our #PostOfTheWeek, DAI's Lorie Stokes writes about how USAID designed the Programa para el Fortalecimiento de Instituciones de Justicia Penal Estatal (ConJusticia) to strengthen the criminal justice system in #Mexico in eight partner states. High levels of violence, organized crime, and impunity in Mexico have reduced public trust in the government and the justice system. Despite these challenges, our partner states have shown commitment to improving the justice system and citizen confidence in state-level institutions. #Governance #LocallyLed #Localization #Partnerships #Justice #Anticorruption

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office PERL Accountable, Responsive, and Capable Government (ARC) programme working at the state and federal level has led to improved inclusiveness, retention, completion, and pass rates. The safeguarding structures established in 50 percent of girls’ secondary schools have impacted the lives of over 15,000 girls and facilitated the reintegration of 71 girls in Kano. The gender parity index rose from 0.88 in 2017 to 0.96 in 2022, and enrolment of pupils with special needs increased from 6,636 in 2018 to 10,478 pupils in 2022 in Kaduna. In Jigawa, the implementation of the Teachers Recruitment and Deployment and Replacement (TRDR) policy and the Girls Education Policy led to the recruitment of over 6,000 teachers for basic schools and an additional 1,950 teachers for senior secondary schools. In Nigeria, urban youth, especially marginalized adolescents, encounter significant barriers to accessing sexual and reproductive health information and services. Traditional programs struggle to reach this demographic effectively, leaving many vulnerable to sexually transmitted diseases and unintended pregnancies. The USAID Youth-Powered Ecosystem to Advance Urban Adolescent Health (YPE4AH) project is changing this narrative. Supported by the U.S. Agency for International Development, YPE4AH empowers young people with skills, resources, and access to voluntary family planning services. Through programs like TEENSMATA hubs, adolescents find safe spaces to access accurate information and support for their Sexual Reproductive Health needs. With the rise of drug-resistant infections posing a challenge to global health, the Department of Health and Social Care's Fleming Fund has started the second phase of the Fleming Fund Country Grant to Indonesia (FFCGI), providing technical assistance to the government in addressing the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Managed by Mott MacDonald, the FFCGI is implemented by DAI and will support ongoing surveillance across human and animal health sectors, including improving surveillance design and implementation, whole genome sequencing, data analytics, and use of data to inform policy and practice in AMR containment in the country. Thomas Weaver, DAI's FFCGI Team Leader, said: “With support from the UK’s Fleming Fund, we have worked closely with the Ministries of Health, Agriculture, and Marine Affairs & Fisheries to ensure Indonesia’s policy and practices in AMR containment help save lives. "We have invested in renovation, equipment, and training for 4 National Reference Laboratories, equipping 21 laboratories, training over 2,000 leaders and technical experts, and providing External Quality Assessments and Quality Management Systems support for 18 laboratories. "The Fleming Fund has worked directly with 11 Indonesian hospitals, 2 public health national reference laboratories, 7 animal health labs, and numerous clinicians, pharmacists, veterinarians, and animal producers across Indonesia to understand how antibiotics are being used and how we can better manage these precious resources.” Dominic Jermey Neha Gulati Ingrida Skarinke #AMR #OneHealth #FlemingFund

Traditional development strategies often use uniform solutions across regions, sometimes overlooking local differences. Smart Specialization, however, tailors support by leveraging each region’s unique strengths and focusing on their distinctive assets and potential rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach. Today, we’re excited to introduce our Capacity Building for the Development and Implementation of Smart Specialisation Strategies (CEDIS3) project, aimed at enhancing #Türkiye’s regional development. This EU-funded initiative will create a comprehensive Smart Specialization Manual and Roadmap to help Türkiye’s regions maximize their potential. This approach aims to encourage more targeted investments, support innovation, and contribute to the country's economic development. European Union Delegation to Türkiye I T.C. Dan Langfitt from DAI, reflects on a interesting question discussed during a small breakout session during the latest Market Systems Resilience (MSR) Community of Practice meeting: How do we effectively communicate the concept of systems thinking to reach the right people in the right context? Dan also highlights the need for donors to grasp the power of systems thinking in program design. He suggests developing clear, concise messaging. This concept is central to bridging the gap between understanding and action. Stay tuned for more on this topic, and as Dan mentioned, we'll hopefully see some of these ideas come to life at the upcoming Market Systems Symposium!
