“[Dollar General has] existing stores located right in the middle of many of these food deserts and already had a program in place to add a significant grocery component to many of their stores,” Fifty for the Future committee member Schawnee Hightower said. “We’re very pleased Dollar General chose Little Rock as their first market for a large-scale pilot.” After a major grocer closed two of its Little Rock, Arkansas locations in August 2022, DG engaged with elected officials and community leaders to understand the city’s food access needs. Leveraging its real estate footprint, produce availability and purpose-driven mission to address food insecurity in the area, DG brought affordable produce to the community. Today we celebrate the U.S. Coast Guard's 234th birthday by recognizing and thanking our employees, and others, who served and continue to serve our country. Andrew E. of DG's Scottsville, Kentucky Distribution Center served in the Coast Guard from 2005-2009 as a machinery technician. He served on an icebreaker in Antarctica for one-year, followed by a law enforcement vessel performing counter drug enforcement in Central America and, finally, a fishery boarding and search and rescue team in Alaska. "My experience in the Coast Guard, dealing with high stress emergency situations, has prepared me for my role as a merge operator at DG where I'm able to deal with multiple issues at once. It also makes me proud when DG donates to hurricane disaster relief." Thank you, Andrew, for exhibiting DG's mission of #ServingOthers!
