"EDC, which represents many of the organizations fighting efforts to restart Exxon’s former assets, applauded the Fire Marshal’s decision. “The analysis failed to adequately address a worst-case scenario,” said Alex Katz, EDC’s executive director. “We already know the risk,” he stated, listing the 150-mile stretch of coastline that was impacted by the spill, “the untold number of animals killed,” and the “hundreds of millions” spent on cleaning up the mess. Restarting the pipeline, he charged, would invite further disasters and generate the single largest source of greenhouse gases in the county." https://lnkd.in/gs_ACAYy

We are excited to present Hillary Hauser with our 2024 Environmental Hero Award at Green & Blue on Sunday, June 9th. Hillary has been a force for protection and appreciation of the ocean. As a writer, photojournalist, diver, adventurer, environmental activist, and leader of Heal the Ocean, Hillary has been on the front lines of this fight for more than five decades. With Hillary at the helm, Heal the Ocean has won many victories – removing miles of septic systems from the Santa Barbara coast, upgrading wastewater treatment plants, protecting wildlife from Styrofoam pollution, and organizing countless beach cleanups. More recently, HTO has been leading the effort to cap the leaking oil wells off the coast of Summerland. Get your tickets to Green & Blue today and join us in honoring Hillary for all that she’s done for our ocean and communities. The event will take place at the Stow House in Goleta, brining together 500 guests to celebrate the many victories we’ve won together for nature and the communities of California’s central coast. Guests will enjoy food by @duocatering, wine from @theojaivineyard, beer from @rinconbreweryinc and live music from @willbremanmusic. There will also be a large silent auction, an energetic live auction with unique trips, a surf board and an electric bike by @radpowerbikes available, and a short program with the presentation of our Environmental Hero Award! We hope you’ll join us on June 9th, 2-5:30PM. Tickets and more info: https://lnkd.in/gP3m4Ptq

CalGEM is in the process of a statewide plan to cease the approval of all permit applications (including renewals) for well-stimulation treatments, such as fracking, that involve pumping fluid into the well. While EDC and our partners, Santa Barbara–Ventura chapter of the Sierra Club are in support of this regulation coming from CalGEM, we will ask them to strengthen it to include steam injection methods that have some of the same threats but are even more energy intensive. 100% of the onshore projects proposed in Santa Barbara County in the past decade have been steam injection projects. CalGEM will hold a public hearing on March 26 at 5:30PM. You can register to join us here: https://lnkd.in/gX9eZ3Nq
