California's Park Fire is now the fourth-largest wildfire in state history. And as the world warms, we can expect more monstrous wildfires like this. But the best way to save our forests might be to fight fire with fire. Read more: https://bit.ly/3yzZ1B1

“New York City is at a crossroads; the decisions we make now will determine the city’s livability in a climate-changed world. The city faces growing climate threats that are exacerbating outdated infrastructure, and an affordable housing crisis that already affects about half of the city’s households,” writes Kate Boicourt, director of EDF's Climate Resilient Coasts & Watersheds program. Kate’s new op-ed in Crain's New York Business suggests ways New York City can progress its climate initiatives while addressing infrastructure and housing challenges. When we say we need a lot more transmission lines to connect and deliver clean power, we mean a LOT. The U.S. needs to build or upgrade around 75,000 miles of transmission lines to meet our climate goals – the equivalent of building *30 transmission lines connecting Los Angeles to New York City.* Finding faster ways to build transmission where it causes the least impact to communities and the environment – like using existing routes for highways and railroads – is going to be key. Did you know there's no such thing as hurricane insurance? “Homeowners might think insurance has them covered, but that’s not the case when it comes to many natural disasters," our insurance expert Carolyn Kousky explains to the Capitol Gains podcast. Not only are our insurance systems not set up for climate disasters, but the climate crisis is making insurance markets even more vulnerable. Want to dive even deeper? Just look at Florida. "Florida is ground zero for what's happening in our insurance markets," Dr. Kousky said in an interview with the America Adapts podcast. To understand what's at stake for our insurance system--and the homeowners and communities who depend on it--under a climate crisis, listen to these two great episodes featuring Dr. Kousky. Exciting news! We’re getting a sneak preview of the comprehensive data MethaneSAT will provide. A plane equipped with the same measurement technology as the satellite completed 30 flights over U.S. oil and gas fields. And the data shows methane emissions are way higher than both the industry target and EPA estimates. Here’s the exciting part. This is just a fraction of the information we’ll get from MethaneSAT. Soon oil and gas companies, investors, regulators and the public will have access to continuous high-resolution measurements. And that data is the missing piece we need to drive fast action to cut methane. https://lnkd.in/dc5giNue

Breaking: New MethaneAIR findings show U.S. oil & gas fields emit four times more methane than EPA estimates. The data reveals 7.5 million metric tons of methane emitted per year, compared to the reported 1.6 million. These findings underscore the need for accurate, measurement-based data to effectively manage and mitigate methane emissions. Read more: https://lnkd.in/gssqJcpA

Milwaukee has 65,000 lead lines. Since a city ordinance requiring removal in 2017, Milwaukee Water Works is accelerating the pace to replace 3,500 lines per year. The city is also targeting neighborhoods most in need, tapping into federal funds - particularly from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law - so that homeowners pay nothing, and supporting the local workforce. Important read from Kaveh Madani in Forbes today, on the urgency of tackling methane emissions ⬇ "Due to its chemical structure, methane can trap more heat in the atmosphere, making it over 80 times more harmful than CO2 in the first 20 years after its release. This greenhouse gas is responsible for one-third of total warming since the Industrial Revolution. But this is not the whole story. Methane is also a major contributor to the formation of ozone, a detrimental air pollutant that harms humans, ecosystems, and agricultural production. Annually, half a million premature deaths across the world are caused by the ozone resulting from human-caused methane production." International Methane Emissions Observatory - IMEO
