Join us in raising a glass (or an ESA mug) to celebrate the anniversary of the Great American Outdoors Act! 🎉 Signed into law on August 4, 2020, this important legislation has led to the establishment of ongoing funding and investments to maintain our national parks and public lands. What better way to celebrate than to get outside and enjoy the beauty of our public lands, thanks to the GAOA! 🌳 📷 Photo from employee-owner Alena Norcott at Dewey Point in Yosemite National Park #GAOA #Conservation #OutdoorRecreation #NationalParks

Since the 1850s, approximately 67 percent of Oregon’s outer coast estuarine habitat has been lost to land development, contributing to drastic declines in salmon and steelhead populations. In the Siuslaw Basin, agriculture, grazing, and timber practices have degraded and reduced aquatic and riparian habitat. The McKenzie River Trust (MRT) purchased the Waite Ranch property to transform the land from a dairy farm to a vital tidal habitat along the Siuslaw River. In collaboration with the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw (CTCLUSI), Siuslaw Watershed Council (SWC), and MRT, ESA led the conceptual restoration design and preliminary engineering analyses, developed construction documents, prepared permit applications, and are providing engineering and environmental compliance services during construction. When construction is completed in 2025, the site will be a 200-acre, high-quality feeding and rearing habitat for Oregon Coast coho, Chinook salmon, steelhead, and sea-run coastal cutthroat trout, as well as other aquatic and avian species. 🟩 Neon ‘brat’ green may be this summer’s hot color trend, but you know what colors never go out of style? Safety Orange and Fluorescent Yellow. Providing high visibility and contrast, these brightly colored vests are essential items that keep our teams safe on project sites and construction areas! 🧡💛👷🏻👷🏾♀️ Pictured: ESA employee-owners wearing on-trend protective gear across several projects, including Ed Warner, Alaina Floor, PE, Becca DeShetler, and our crews working on California High Speed Rail. #SafetyFirst #PPE #ConstructionSafety #EnvironmentalMonitoring #SafetyFashion #brat

We’re excited to share that Jorgen Blomberg has been selected to lead the firm’s Environmental Hydrology and Design (EH&D) practice! Jorgen will be responsible for guiding and growing the practice, which extends from coast to coast and includes over 80 practitioners specializing in environmental engineering, landscape architecture, restoration planning, and design. An industry leader in wetland and river restoration design for over four decades, ESA’s EH&D team has pioneered nature-based solutions for coastal shoreline resilience and multi-benefit flood management. “Jorgen’s leadership will guide our talented team across the nation to drive sustainable innovations that address the complex challenges facing our coastal, estuarine, and riverine environments and support thriving public spaces,” says ESA CEO Leslie Moulton-Post. Join us in congratulating Jorgen on this new endeavor, and read more about his appointment and experience at the following link: https://lnkd.in/gi7Qdvw2 #EnvironmentalHydrologyAndDesign #Hydrology #EnvironmentalDesign #Restoration #FloodManagement #LandscapeArchitecture #Engineering #RiverRestoration #RestorationPlanning

California’s water future means capturing every drop! 🌧️💧❄️ Last winter’s unprecedented storms dumped historic levels of rain and snow in California, subsequently ending three years of the state’s persistent drought. With all this rainfall, 90 percent of the state’s above-ground reservoirs are full and near capacity. But in a routinely drought-prone state, wet winters like these are never a guarantee. How can we effectively capture and store more precipitation for future use? ESA’s water specialists are working closely with water managers to develop effective water conservation strategies across California. Our latest article explores two key approaches—from LA County’s innovative stormwater capture system, to Flood-Managed Aquifer Recharge (Flood-MAR) in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Valley—which are working to replenish aquifers, manage flood waters, and enhance the state’s water resiliency. Whether he’s piloting drones high up in the skies, or gathering crucial data on the ground below, Geospatial Service Manager Jason Nielsen is a true expert in spatial data management and beyond. An employee-owner for 19 years, Jason supports ESA’s team of GIS professionals, leading project management, mobile data collection deployment, field data collection, and cartographic services. Jason is also passionate about supporting ESA’s early-career professionals and co-leads ESA’s Mentorship Program in Southern California. Outside the office, you’ll find him on the links at Torrey Pines, belting out some karaoke tunes with his San Diego colleagues, and working to make the office’s kickball game an annual tradition. “I feel fortunate to have such an amazing team to support and collaborate with every day!” he says. We're grateful for our fantastic interns! This summer, we’re thrilled to have 14 interns who have joined us across all four of ESA’s regions, pursuing their interests in engineering, environmental work, planning, GIS, marketing, accounting, and business management. ESA’s internship program provides interns with hands-on, practical experience to develop their skills and work alongside experienced professionals, and provide a glimpse into the many types of careers in environmental consulting. Like Stefanie Lehner, a current Miami University master’s student in conservation biology who has gained biological experience assisting rare plant, nesting bird, and burrowing owl surveys and even had a close encounter with a mountain lion! “My experience so far at ESA has been really great. I’ve been able to get a ton of experience with different aspects of the job, and I’ve been able to do a bunch of different types of field work,” she shares. “Coming into this I really didn’t know much about consulting at all, so I think it’s been good to be able to get that experience.” Thanks to our 2024 cohort: Linden Cheek, Jessica McKay, Malcolm Silva, Alissa Lun, Stefanie Lehner, Elena Mathew, Leila Yee, Broderick Beckert, Shina Cortez Garcia, Christina Keegan, Trevor Lau, Olivia Pereyra, Ryan Perry, and Alejandra Guzmán, for all your hard work and teamwork at ESA! #NationalInternDay #InternAppreciation #Internship #ProfessionalDevelopment #EnviromentalCareers

The Colorado River is a crucial lifeline for the West. Flowing through seven states and parts of Mexico, it supplies water to more than 40 million people. Numerous native and endangered species, including 26 species of fish only found in the Basin’s canyons, depend on the river and its tributaries. Following years of shrinking supply which are now at a “tipping point,” state and water agencies are working to reduce water use on the river through the Bureau of Reclamation’s Lower Colorado Conservation Program. As these programs get underway, complex decisions must be made to balance the competing needs of protecting vulnerable species and ecosystems, and ensuring water supply for millions of downstream users. “There is an inextricable relation to how we manage water in the West—what water decisions happen in the Colorado River ripple throughout the Basin with broader ramifications,” shares Principal Scientist Ramona Swenson PhD, CERP Swenson. ESA is working closely with the Bureau throughout the three-year program. Water management and biological resources specialists have been studying the potential effects of water reduction on federally listed species and monitoring ecological impacts.
