Once buried under years of trash and junk cars, Duwamish Hill Preserve is now full of big trees, native plants, winding accessible trails, and beautiful interpretive art that captures the rich tribal history of the Puget Sound Salish. We've just conserved a new addition to this urban treasure. Grateful for the tireless restoration work by community volunteers and for our 20-year partnership with the City of Tukwila. Join us for Forterra Friday at Patterson Creek Preserve. On Friday, August 16 from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM, we will be removing non-native invasive species like Himalayan blackberry to create space for native shrubs and trees that will support the local wildlife. Patterson Creek is a special site to Forterra and is a great spot to learn about ecological restoration and what Forterra does as an unconventional land trust. To sign up: >>> https://lnkd.in/g7U5AvYk In October, November, and December we will continue to host events at Patterson Creek. #Forterra #ForterraNW #landforgood #Restoration #Conservation #VolunteerOpportunity

Our Summer Saturdays walk at Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve was a perfect, hot day to be underneath the shady canopy of giant maples and 100-year-old fir trees. Naturalist and professional interpreter Gary Mozel (in the green vest) unveiled so many fascinating facts. Did you know? - Snags of old red alder trees provide habitat for migratory bats that can eat up to 500 mosquitos a night. Thank you, bats (you’re not so scary)! - Second growth forests are the most carbon sequestering because of their fast growth. - Western tanagers, intensely yellow with a bright orange head, make their yearly visit from Central America to feast on insects. We were fortunate enough to spot one. - We also learned that beavers, while creating dams and large pools of deeper wetlands, encourage growth of native species of plants (Douglas spirea and cattails) and push out the invasive canary grass. Two very special guests attended our morning walk: Ann and Fred Weinmann. They launched the preservation of Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve by recognizing and advocating for its special contribution to the Sammamish watershed. This led to Forterra and partners protecting this marshy gem. Thank you to all who attended our Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve walks. We have more great events coming soon! Forterra’s Board of Directors has unanimously endorsed joining an unprecedented statewide coalition of more than 200 organizations to defeat Initiative 2117 – the November election ballot measure that would repeal Washington’s Climate Commitment Act. Opposing the repeal of this landmark law aligns with Forterra’s mission to innovate and scale land-based solutions to address the climate crisis and support equitable, green and prosperous communities for all. Critical funding for conservation is at risk. If the repeal passes, Initiative 2117 would slash billions of dollars from vital community investments, shifting the costs of carbon pollution onto families and communities. We can’t afford it. #NoOn2117  #WeCantAffordIt

While we enjoy getting outside for Forterra Nature Discovery Program™ Summer Saturdays, here’s our first Fall Forays event to add to your calendar. Join us on September 21 at Hazel Wolf Wetland Preserve for an afternoon of forest meditation and teachings with Ajahn Kovilo and Ajahn Nisabho of Clear Mountain Monastery. The event is free. To register: https://lnkd.in/gE4vSnAk Designed for everyone to experience, the 1:30 pm - 3:30 pm event will start with a brief introduction to the property followed by a sitting meditation, a talk and ending with a walking meditation.  The Buddha was born under a tree, attained Enlightenment under a tree, lived and practiced under trees, and passed away under a tree. From those earliest days through the entire course of Buddhist history native forests and wilderness preserves played a vital part in nurturing the spiritual lives of sincere and ardent practitioners intent on understanding the truth of “the way things are.”  One of the highest-quality wetlands in the Greater Seattle Area, Hazel Wolf Wetlands Preserve is a wonderland of ponds, marshes and forests stewarded and protected by Forterra. Let’s see what we can learn from sitting together there!  See all upcoming Forterra Nature Discovery™ events: https://lnkd.in/gkRTnvRj #forterranaturediscovery #LandConservation #CommunityDevelopment #SustainableCommunities #EnvironmentalStewardship #ClimateAction #NatureAndPeople #WashingtonConservation #ForterraNW #LandforGood
