We have produced a Fact Check and Reporting Guide, with InterACT, on the participation and eligibility of Paris 2024 Olympic Boxers Imane Khelif and Lin Yu-ting. From interACT Executive Director Erika Lorshbough (they/she):  “We stand for the right of all women to participate in athletics, including those born with variations in their sex traits such as chromosomal or hormonal variations. It is disappointing to see hate in response to competition taking place at the Olympics, which should be a joyous celebration of high-level athletic skill. Commentary misconstruing elite-level competition between women athletes as violence is shameful. All women should be able to participate in their sports free from discrimination and exclusion that is antithetical to the spirit of sport itself.” From GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis (she/her): “Imane Khelif’s win at the Paris 2024 Games should be a triumph for her and her home country, but it’s unfortunately been clouded by baseless transphobia, misinformation and hate. Imane is not transgender and does not identify as intersex. Here are the facts: The Paris 2024 Games are the most inclusive ever and feature the most out LGBTQ olympians competing. This includes several athletes who don’t fit gender expectations, who all comply with competition eligibility rules set by the IOC. The latest GLAAD voter poll showed that 94% of registered LGBTQ voters said they were definitely or probably voting in the upcoming election. 93% of registered LGBTQ voters, voted in the last presidential election. The Biden-Harris administration has been the most LGBTQ affirming presidency in the history of the United States with over 300 pro-LGBTQ equality moves. In contrast, the Trump administration had over 220 anti-LGBTQ moves. Project 2025 is a dangerous and unhinged playbook that the Trump campaign sees as the future of America. Project 2025 is a dangerous, unhinged playbook showcasing the insidious plans of anti-LGBTQ extremists hell-bent on destroying democracy. Writing a 1,000-page screed railing against LGBTQ peoples’ mere existence, while in your personal life cavorting with a friend dressed in drag, is the definition of hypocrisy. For anyone who didn’t get it the first time they saw Project 2025, here it is clear as day: its authors believe that cisgender heterosexual white men are free to do whatever they’d like, but the rest of us do not deserve equal rights, jobs, families, or protection from discrimination. https://lnkd.in/eN43BiPu

GLAAD urges all media covering Trump’s choice for vice president to include his history of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and policy. LGBTQ Americans are taxpayers, family members, colleagues, classmates, neighbors and friends, and our concerns are the same as any Americans: our freedom to be ourselves to live in safety and dignity, the right to make private health care decisions, read books of our choosing, marry who we love, and not be discriminated against for who we are. Media must include LGBTQ people in all stories and conversations about policies affecting us and our families. Our concerns are not a ‘culture war’ sideshow—they are central to the core issues of this election, and the freedoms all Americans want to preserve and protect.

Vice Presidential candidate JD Vance wrote the foreword to a forthcoming book by the head of Project 2025, the vast rightwing, authoritarian presidential transition plan which Vance’s running mate Donald Trump has tried to disavow. Project 2025 is spearheaded and organized by the far-right Heritage Foundation, and with 100 coalition partner organizations, many of which are well-known for pushing anti-LGBTQ policy, legal efforts, and harmful rhetoric, accompanied by Christian nationalism. In advance publicity materials, Vance says of Kevin Roberts, president of the Heritage Foundation: “Never before has a figure with [his] depth and stature within the American Right tried to articulate a genuinely new future for conservatism.” The same publicity material describes Roberts as “head” of Project 2025.
