Big news for our member Cala Systems (formerly Altus Thermal) today as it has announced a $5.6M seed round and the commercial launch of its product, a highly-intelligent heat pump water heater that ensures comfort, saves energy, and reduces emissions! 🚿 Cala's highly efficient and intelligent heat pump system heats water based on the patterns of hot water use in each home and the preferences of the homeowner. With this system, you can say goodbye to suddenly-cold showers: Cala improves hot water availability when demand is high while minimizing heating costs when demand is low. Homeowners can also tailor water heating to their home and priorities in the following ways: 👉 Synchronizing water heating with the power output of their home solar system, minimizing their greenhouse gas emissions by coordinating water heating with times of clean electricity on the grid 👉 Decreasing costs for homes with variable electric rates 👉 Preheating water before potential power disruptions 👉 ... and more! This system can benefit both homeowners and installers with local, state, and federal incentives, including up to a 30% tax rebate through the #IRA. Cala has already signed 10+ LOIs with professionals plumbers, electricians, and HVAC contractors to support installation, and plans to conduct all final assembly in Massachusetts, bringing high-quality, green manufacturing jobs to the local economy. Humidity poses a major challenge for homes: it requires high amounts of energy to dehumidify, not just cool, rooms; and it accelerates the deterioration of the building materials behind the wall. Adept Materials' solution is a two-material system that helps homes self-regulate their internal humidity: one acts as a sponge to absorb water vapor and release it over time, and the other acts as a weather-resistive barrier that blocks air flow while allowing water vapor to pass through. When paired together, the materials help pull humidity out of a building: "when mounted to an exterior wall, the spongy layer will pull moisture away out of the house through the inward-facing barrier. It stays there until the sun warms the outside of the wall and evaporates the moisture," writes Tim De Chant in TechCrunch. Adept Materials participated in #GoBuild2019, the InNOVAte 2019 Challenge with Saint-Gobain, to accelerate building-materials innovations. Since then, the startup has been busy at work developing its products—starting with a paint and primer duo designed for bathrooms—and even testing them in Greentown's shower rooms. The startup recently raised a $4M seed round from some of the largest homebuilders in the U.S. to continue developing the water-resistive barrier and help bring the paint to market. https://lnkd.in/eNhZKsrV Derek Stein
