    Heat related illnesses can be preventable and understanding the risk factors can help mitigate them. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), factors that may increase the risk of developing heat related illness include high levels of humidity, dehydration, and sunburn. Simple measures individuals can take to beat the heat range from drinking plenty of hydrating fluids to staying cool in an air conditioned area.     As of 8:00 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), Tropical Storm Debby is located off the coast of South Carolina about 65 miles from Charleston moving slowly eastward at 5 miles per hour (mph). It is expected to make a second landfall late Wednesday night, August 7, or early Thursday morning, August 8, between Charleston and Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Debby has brought torrential rainfall resulting in at least six weather-related fatalities, significant flooding, and several tornado warnings to communities across Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The NHC also reports two tropical storms, Emilia and Fabio, in the Eastern Pacific moving west, neither of which are forecasted to impact land.     According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), potentially historic rainfall amounts of up to 25 inches are forecasted for portions of Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, prompting a major flood threat as Tropical Storm Debby continues to move northeast along the coast. Heavy rain and flooding can pose a variety of risks to persons, pets, and properties. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) encourages individuals to take the necessary precautions and prepare beforehand in the event flooding occurs.     On August 5, Hurricane Debby made landfall along the coast of Florida's Big Bend as a Category (Cat) 1 hurricane, prompting an ongoing Storm Surge Warning across Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina. As Hurricane Debby continues to track northeast along the coast, portions of the Southeastern United States (US) are forecasted to receive heavy rainfall of up to 30 inches along with catastrophic flooding. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis issued a state of emergency for 61 counties across the state on August 2 in anticipation of Debby's landfall.     Last month, Extreme Heat Awareness Month served as an important reminder to stay aware and prepared this summer as the National Weather Service's (NWS) three month Climate Outlook forecasted above-normal temperatures from coast to coast in the United States (US) between August and October. Extreme heat can prompt numerous cascading impacts for communities, including the fueling of increased wildfire risks across the country.     As of today, July 31, 95 active wildfires have collectively burned at least 2,180,105 acres throughout the United States, bringing the 2024 year-to-date totals to 4,449,282 acres burned from 28,154 wildfires, according to the National Interagency Fire Center (NIFC). Over the last couple of weeks, California, Idaho, and Oregon have been collectively battling over 55 wildfires as extreme fire weather conditions fuel rapid growth. California is currently battling the biggest wildfire of the year and the sixth biggest in the States history.
