During the 2024 Summer Olympics, we witness the incredible resilience, perseverance and courage of athletes from around the globe. At HCA Healthcare, we’re equally inspired by the strength and determination of our patients. Today, we’re spotlighting a special HCA Healthcare patient…who just so happens to be a 1984 Olympian. Tori’s life-long passion for swimming began at 8-years-old and her dream of competing on an international stage came true when she swam the 200-meter backstroke in the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles, California. Additionally, she was a part of The University of Texas Austin swim team that won the NCAA national championship from 1984-1987. For decades, Tori swam injury-free, but in 2022, she began to experience severe back pain. She was unable to perform basic daily activities –washing dishes, walking up steps or getting out of bed – without pain. Tori was diagnosed with scoliosis, a disorder causing curvature of the spine, and degenerative arthritis in the disks of her back. For specialized spine care, Tori sought treatment at HCA Healthcare affiliate St. David's HealthCare. To preserve Tori’s mobility and help her continue swimming for years to come, Dr. Craig Kuhns, an orthopedic surgeon at HCA Healthcare affilate St. David's Medical Center and Austin Spine, used advanced image guidance technology to perform minimally invasive surgery to straighten Tori’s spine, remove bulging discs and insert spacers to protect her spine from decompressing. She was able to walk the night of her surgery and felt instant relief. Six-months after her life-changing surgery, Tori returned to the pool. Today, Tori continues to pursue her love of swimming. In honor of the 2024 Summer Olympics, Tori and the members of her 1984 Olympic team reunited to celebrate their 40th anniversary and to cheer on Team U.S.A. 2024 during the swimming trials. Thank you to our comprehensive spine care teams across HCA Healthcare who help patients like Tori get back to doing what they love. Across HCA Healthcare, more than 4,600 medical assistants (MAs) play a vital role in patient care by delivering exceptional, compassionate care in a variety of clinical settings. Cross-trained in both clinical and administrative duties, medical assistants work alongside nurses and physicians to serve our patients. One medical assistant making a positive impact is HCA Healthcare colleague Anna Espinoza. She joined HCA Healthcare in 2019 as a patient specialist and later became a front desk coordinator. Eager to grow in her healthcare career, Anna joined the MA Fast-Track program – a program created in collaboration with the College of Health Care Professions provided at no cost to HCA Healthcare colleagues upon successful completion. This 12-week intensive program combines virtual learning with hands-on training to provide a comprehensive introduction to medical assisting. Today, Anna is proudly serving as a medical assistant within our CareNow Urgent Care clinics in Houston, Texas. With HCA Healthcare’s education assistance programs, Anna is now pursuing her nursing degree with Galen College of Nursing. “HCA Healthcare offers so much more than just a job,” she shared. “As a grandmother, I can show my grandkids that it’s never too late to keep going.” HCA Healthcare is dedicated to supporting the education and development of colleagues, like Anna, by offering a variety of programs, resources and opportunities. At HCA Healthcare, we pull together to support and celebrate patients and each other. And, neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) graduations are one of our favorite types of celebrations. When babies are born sick or premature, HCA Healthcare’s tiniest patients are cared for in one of our more than 90 NICUs. As babies are discharged home to be with their families, NICU graduations signify an emotional milestone for both families and caregivers. Denver was born at 24-weeks, just shy of 14 ounces, at HCA Healthcare affiliate The Women’s Hospital at Henrico Doctors' Hospital. From the day she was born, Denver’s strength and resilience shined as she continued to grow and reach new milestones. Denver’s mom, Deondra, shared the comfort she felt knowing Denver was being cared for with expertise and compassion. “As a first-time mom, you’re worried about so many things. But the level of care and making us feel seen and heard was the difference.” Denver received comprehensive care from the Richmond, Virginia hospital’s Level III NICU team, comprised of neonatologists, nurses, social workers and speech, occupational and respiratory therapists. After a 100-day stay, Denver’s parents were thrilled to learn she was ready to go home. Dressed in a cap and gown, Denver celebrated her graduation alongside HCA Virginia Health System caregivers. “Our patient success stories are amongst the greatest joys that we experience in the NICU and the love that we have for our patients when they have graduated from a micro-preemie on maximum support to going home as a near term infant is something that cannot be measured,” explained Sarah Scheer, NICU director of nursing at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. “Hearing the families’ expression of joy and gratitude fills our cup - and is our ‘why.’” Please join HCA Healthcare as we celebrate baby Denver’s NICU graduation and bright future! #CareLikeFamily #HCABabies

At HCA Healthcare, more than 99,000 nurses are foundational to all we do and key to delivering on our commitment to provide the best possible care for patients. For HCA Healthcare nurse Frandella Pierrebrown, director of medical and surgical services at HCA Florida Westside Hospital, inspiration to pursue a career in nursing was deeply rooted in her personal experiences as a young child. Frandella witnessed firsthand the vital role nurses play in patient care as her mother battled chronic illness and passed from a stroke at the young age of 37. It was through these transformational experiences that Frandella was called to continue caring for others through nursing. At her mother’s bedside, Frandella realized the opportunity nurses have to bridge gaps in care with compassion and understanding while delivering quality healthcare with expertise and skill. “My experiences led me to want to be the best possible advocate and caregiver for others in their time of need,” Frandella shared. Frandella puts her care philosophies into action every day at the 210-bed Plantation, Florida hospital, which is certified by the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration as a Comprehensive Stroke Center and by The Joint Commission as a Thrombectomy-Capable Stroke Center. As she carries her mother’s memory within her heart, Frandella is dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of others not only through the care she provides as a nurse but also through stroke prevention education within her community. Thank you, Frandella, to your ongoing commitment to the care and improvement of human life. Earlier this month, #HurricaneBeryl made landfall on the Texas Gulf Coast as a Category 1 hurricane bringing powerful winds, flooding, widespread tree and powerline damage, and millions left without power. In collaboration with HCA Healthcare’s Enterprise Emergency Operations Center (EEOC), key resources – such as medications, generator power, food and water – were distributed to facilities to maintain continuity of care. HCA Houston Healthcare colleagues stood ready to serve with strength and compassion. Amid the storm, we saw the best of humanity shine through and we’re sharing a few of those stories here: 🔶 Food and Nutrition Services (FNS) team members at The Woman's Hospital of Texas in Houston served a free, hot meal - “Breakfast with Beryl” - to over 420 patients and colleagues the morning the storm came through. Although generator power allowed HCA Houston Healthcare Clear Lake to continue operations, elevators temporarily went down during lunch service. Colleagues came together to carry nearly 150 meal trays up numerous flights of stairs to deliver to patient rooms. Many non-clinical team members provided additional support to the FNS team to retrieve patient trays, wash dishes and more. 🔶 As Hurricane Beryl was initially headed towards Corpus Christi, Texas, HCA Healthcare’s collaborative network allowed Corpus Christi Medical Center to safely transport eight NICU babies and six high-risk OB patients to HCA Healthcare affiliate Methodist Children’s Hospital in San Antonio. The transfer of these patients was a remarkable exercise in coordination and communication, orchestrated by dozens and dozens of colleagues. 🔶 Due to power outages, many Houston residents were left without access to AC. One church cooling center was made available to community members through the collaboration of local community partners and HCA Houston Healthcare Southeast. After patients were discharged from the hospital’s ER, they were sent to the church for food, water and to cool off. Eager to serve Houston residents further, hospital leaders came together to donate new pillows to the church so that residents would have a comfortable place to lay their head. Please join us in thanking our colleagues for providing uninterrupted care during Hurricane Beryl and for their unwavering commitment to the care and improvement of human life. #CareLikeFamily #HCAEmergencyOperations

Around the world, an estimated 27 million people are victims of human trafficking and forced labor, including thousands of people in the United States. Further, the World Health Organization estimates that a significant number of individuals who have experienced trafficking encountered a healthcare professional during their trafficking experience. In the fight against human trafficking, HCA Healthcare is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Office on Trafficking in Persons (OTIP) to provide online and in-person trainings to our colleagues to inform and enhance the public health response to human trafficking. To date, more than 500 HCA Healthcare colleagues have participated in our Human Trafficking Awareness and Prevention Program. OTIP provides human trafficking training to professionals in healthcare, behavioral health, public health and social services settings through SOAR Online. The SOAR program teaches professionals how to: · STOP: describe the types of trafficking and common risk factors · OBSERVE: identify individuals and environmental indicators of human trafficking · ASK: screen and identify individuals who may have experienced trafficking or increased risk factors using a trauma-informed and person-centered approach · RESPOND: address individual needs by coordinating across multidisciplinary partners to deliver appropriate services On World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, we are humbled by the strength of survivors and advocates who continue to inspire us to build a healthier, safer world. HCA Healthcare patient Daniel Ganier recently shared his stroke story with the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. At 29 years old, he thought he was too young to have a stroke. That was until Daniel experienced an abrupt, excruciating thunderclap headache that caused him to lose consciousness. His wife, Denisha, immediately called 911. When paramedics arrived, his blood pressure was very high, which could indicate a possible stroke – but, since he wasn’t even 30, Daniel, a truck driver, dismissed the possibility. He declined to go to the hospital. Hours later, Daniel’s headache returned and his symptoms worsened. Denisha insisted that he seek medical attention and he was quickly transported to HCA Houston Healthcare Northwest from an urgent care facility. Upon arrival at the hospital, it was determined that Daniel had suffered a ruptured brain aneurysm. Dr. Mohammad El-Ghanem, neuroendovascular surgeon and vascular neurologist at HCA Houston Healthcare, performed emergency surgery to repair the aneurysm. Facing multiple organ failures, Daniel also required ventilator support and a month-long stay in the intensive care unit (ICU). With incredible skill and expertise, his comprehensive care team – including cardiologists, ICU physicians, physical therapists and infectious disease specialists – worked together to provide lifesaving care for Daniel. Today, he has made a full recovery. “It was truly a group effort across care teams in Daniel’s recovery,” shared Dr. El-Ghanem. “It was not a one-man show and because of that, Daniel is here today.” Dr. El-Ghanem also emphasized that strokes can happen to people at any age, so everybody should be aware of symptoms and take them seriously.
