Hyder Completes The Wild West Relay! 2 vans, 2 drivers (Thanks Yvonne Wenzel & Jack Wenzel!), 11 runners, 33.5 hours, and 198.5 miles – that’s what it took for team Rocky Mountain Hyder to make its way from Fort Collins to Steamboat Springs for a successful showing in this year’s Wild West Relay! Although there was some blood, sweat, and tears along the way, the team – Robbie Miller, Alexis Brown, Michael Brown, Mitch Miller, Scott Miller, Kevin Clary, Preston Boyd, Michael Sternfeld, Wyatt Knapp, Dana Williams, and Tyler Gibbs – powered through the long distances and high elevation gains to cross the finish line in the heat of the afternoon at Gondola Square in Steamboat on Saturday! From sleeping on the lawn of North Park High School in Walden in 36-degree temps at 2:00AM in the morning to taking a refreshing dip in the Laramie River at the Woods Landing Resort in Wyoming after a hearty, pasta-loaded spaghetti dinner, the team’s effort was nothing shy of an adventure, to say the least. There were many laughs, bonds were made, and most likely every runner did better than they might have expected when the initial invite went out back in April – CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! Special shout out to Robbie and Kevin for leading the team up Deadman’s Pass and Rabbit Ears Pass, respectively! Here’s to looking forward to doing it all over again next year! #wildwestrelay #teambuilding

The OZ studio, located in the RiNo Arts District, is currently undergoing a substantial office refresh. By the end of the month, our entire staff will be under one roof for the first time in our 60-year history! We spent a little time tying the history of our building into the new look. In 1895, William Albert Weigele, the proprietor of the Weigele Riveted Steele and Pipe Works, purchased this block and, under his supervision, built 3003 and the 3033 warehouse structure (our current two buildings) in the 1930s. 3001 Larimer & 3002 Walnut were built in 1907, and these are the two spaces we are expanding into. Thompson Pipe and Steel occupied the 3003 building (where our current main lobby is located) in the 1940’s. Thompson Pipe and Steel produced coated “spiral welded steel pipe” (very large diameter) but also built Destroyer Escort Ships during WWII. They built large sections that could be shipped by rail through the Moffet Tunnel to California, where they were welded. Many of the cranes used for manufacturing in the buildings have been restored to working order and can be seen in our space. At one point in history, large winches crawled along the I-beams to move items from one building to the next, and then the crane system moved back and forth within each building. Some of the train tracks used for moving large pieces of steel in the back parking lot are still visible. The brick building (3003) was later occupied in the 1980s and 1990s by Waste Management Recycling as a satellite station. Tom Sprung purchased the property in 2000 and renovated it for office use. Thank you to Hyder Construction for working so fast to get us into a new vibe that reflects our current culture and work styles. #OZarchitecture #architecture #interiors #adaptivereuse #rino #rivernorth #architectureoffice #hyderconstruction #RTM #tomsprung #rinoartsdistrict

Please join us in celebrating Doug Thompson's thirty years of service at Hyder Construction! Doug started at Hyder 30 years ago as a Project Manager at the Federal Reserve building downtown. Quickly proving his capabilities, he was assigned a number of challenging projects in the mountains including the Bridge Street Lodge Condominiums, a complex renovation at the Eagle County Courthouse. Since his early days at Hyder, he has been involved in many of our iconic projects including The Navarre Building, The Vail Marriott, Parker Town Hall, Founder's Park, Vail's Front Door, Vail Four Seasons, Breckenridge Brewery, Lone Rock Retreat, Breckenridge Parking Structure and Aerie Lodge to name just a few. It’s no coincidence that these projects have earned three AGC ACE awards, multiple 2nd place AGC awards and a national ENR award! Doug's knowledge of the industry, ability to build difficult construction projects, and focus on building an exceptional product sets the bar high in our business. He has been a mentor to countless PE’s, PM’s, and Superintendents, and as a result, his teams have given him the nickname “The Professor.” Doug does not have to have a personal marketing plan because owners and architects who have worked with Doug reach out to him time and time again with new projects. Doug played a big part over his career in helping develop the best practices included in Hyder's Core Values and in the Hyder Way because of his love of building and commitment to be successful on every project he undertakes, and he has been an integral part of Hyder's success. Cheers and Congratulations Doug!! #employeeanniversary #inspiredpeople #mountainconstruction

HYDER SAFETY TALK...WATER. REST. SHADE. Colorado has experienced some of the hottest days on record in the last month. As temperatures rise, so does the risk of heat-related illnesses on job sites. Although illness from exposure to heat is preventable, every year, thousands become sick from occupational heat exposure, and some cases are fatal. Protecting yourself and others from heat stress, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke is essential for maintaining a safe work environment. Remember, water, rest, and shade are best for keeping your team members safe. Ensure your jobsite has areas of shade where people can get rest from the heat as well as water available. #safetytalk #constructionsafety

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHT: Hyder’s 1031 Santa Fe Office Remodel We can’t believe is has been five years since we moved into our new office! Not only was it a vast improvement on our old, outdated digs, it’s a frequently showcased project in our historical renovation portfolio. The $5.2 renovation to this historic structure, dating back to 1900, converts a dilapidated and mostly vacant building into a vibrant office and retail space. That facade was preserved during the structure’s renovation, which is actually three separate buildings merged into one. Construction also included carving out a portion of the structure to enlarge the adjacent parking lot. Hyder’s office TI features a natural color palette of greys and tans with accents of red and slate blue. It is a blend of offices and open cubicles, but almost all the office and conference room walls are glass to create a feeling of openness and collaboration throughout. This project was the winner of the 2019 ENR Mountain States Best Project in Renovation/Restoration and a 2019 Mayor’s Design Award. Last Friday a group of Hyder employees—Matt Huelskamp, Lori Helderlein, Jacob Walters, Matt Johns, Robbie Miller, Scott Miller, Preston Boyd, Brian Archibald, and Ben Johns—participated the 25th Annual Jane-A-Thon, a two day skiing event at Mary Jane / Winter Park that benefits the non-profit Invest in Kids. Invest in Kids raised $358,400 at this year's Jane-A-Thon. The Hyder team was responsible for $16,120 of that total. Lori won the award (a new pair of skis) for most individual donations and Hyder won the award for most funds raised by a "medium" sized team (less than 25 participants). This year, we had twice as many Hyder folks complete the bump challenge – completing all 16 bump runs at Mary Jane (nearly 25,000 vertical feet): Preston, Robbie, Matt H, Matt J, Ben, Brian, Scott, and Jacob. Invest in Kids (IIK) is a local nonprofit organization working to ensure every Colorado child has a strong start in life. IIK works tirelessly to adopt, implement, and scale proven programs that have the greatest long-term impact on young children and families experiencing poverty, working to improve the health and well-being of 14,000 children and families each year. Thank you so much to all our fundraising partners for their contributions! We have such a great team of employees, trade partners, vendors, owners, and architects. SAFETY TALK...UNSAFE ACTS Most of us know that accidents are caused by only two things - unsafe acts or unsafe conditions. We also know that 9 out of 10 accidents are usually the result of unsafe acts, or things we choose to do when we know better. This is kind of strange if you think about it, but we have more to fear from our own actions than from any other hazards around us when working. Being comfortable with your job is important, but not so much that you start to leave steps out. There are many reasons that someone may take an unsafe approach to their task while on the job. We should practice the brother's keeper mentality and look out for each other, encouraging one another to always work safely. https://lnkd.in/gGTMKHcP

Please join us in congratulating Matthew Armstrong, AIA on his 10-year anniversary at Hyder! Matt joined us after working at a couple of architectural firms and brought with him a great deal of design and management experience as a job captain. During his time at Hyder, Matt has carried the dual roles of BIM manager and Architect. Matt got his architectural license 6 years ago after a rigorous set of exams and this gave us the ability to pursue true design-build projects. Notable amongst the design-build projects is our current office space, which won the prestigious Mayor’s Design Award. With Matt’s BIM efforts he works on Hyder’s high profile and complex projects by wrangling our subcontractors to effectively coordinate the MEP systems with the structural and architectural elements. This process is often very difficult with the tools the subcontractors bring to the table, but Matt is always a patient quarterback in the effort and pushes for accountability from the trade partners. These BIM efforts reduce issues and rework in the field that save our projects a lot of heartache, time, and money. We are lucky to have Matt on our team and look forward to the future together!
