Last month, IFCC's home state of North Carolina received a $500,000 grant from the Appalachian Regional Initiative for Stronger Economies (ARISE). NC was one of three states to receive the grant! These funds will be used to pay for research to identify the necessary upgrades needed at general aviation airports as well as help to prepare them for emerging advanced air mobility (AAM) and sustainable electric aviation. We are happy to see investments being made into this effort, as many of the general aviation airports in NC are severely limited by outdated infrastructure. It is important that these airports get support to ensure they will be able to meet demands as technology continues to develop at a rapid pace in the industry. The aviation industry is grappling with a well-documented pilot shortage, but as Clint Cannaday, Operations & Safety Analyst at In-Flight Crew Connections, suggests, “it’s worth digging a little deeper” into its origins. Cannaday explains that the shortage is influenced by several factors. Regulatory and insurance requirements have made it difficult for new pilots, with 800 to 1,500 hours of flight time, to secure jobs. Previously, regional airlines hired many low-hour pilots for first officer positions, but as captains moved to mainline airlines, it created a void. The industry also faced challenges in finding qualified pilots to replace those retiring, further exacerbating the shortage. Consulting firm Oliver Wyman supports Cannaday's observations, predicting that the pilot shortfall in North America will persist for the next decade. They anticipate airline retirements to peak in 2025-2026, coinciding with industry growth and presenting additional challenges. Cannaday notes, “It will be interesting to see what happens over the next two years,” emphasizing that factors like new aircraft deliveries and economic conditions will impact the situation. In-Flight Crew Connections is well-prepared, boasting a large pool of pilots available on short notice. In contrast to the global trend, British Airways has announced a unique initiative at the Farnborough Airshow. The airline plans to fully fund up to 200 places in its Speedbird Pilot Academy recruitment program for 2025. This initiative aims to remove financial barriers for aspiring commercial pilots, who are often deterred by the £100k cost of training. We all know salary/pay is a key driving factor when looking for a new position, but what other things do aviation professionals care about when looking for a new job? Last month we included a poll in our Monthly Newsletter to see if we could gather some insight... and to be honest we were not shocked by the results. In line with what we have seen from other sources across the industry, job seekers are looking for more than just pay and benefits. They are also highly influenced by a company that values them as a person, not just a worker. They want an enjoyable work environment and good quality of life too! In an industry with a shortage of qualified workers across many positions, if you want to hold onto or attract top talent, it is extremely important to keep this in mind. Let us know if you agree with these results and what your company is doing to attract and retain top talent!

Today, July 24, we pay tribute to a trailblazer, a pioneer, and an inspiration to generations of aviators. Amelia Earhart was an American aviator who set many flying records and championed the advancement of women in aviation. She became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, and the first person ever to fly solo from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland. Her courage, determination, and relentless pursuit of adventure continue to ignite our spirits. Amelia Earhart's legacy reminds us to reach for the skies, to chase our dreams, and to break free from the confines of limitations.
