Updates

  • In-services don't always need to be confined to a classroom and lecture format. At Inspired Memory Care, we believe in the importance of moving around, interacting, and practicing. Recently, we had the opportunity at The 80th Street Residence to enhance our skills through Teamwork training. While maintaining eye contact may seem simple, it's not easy for everyone, and practice helps! We discussed the importance of teamwork and took time to share our team members' strengths. We also explored how easy it can be to miscommunicate with our team members by engaging in drawing activities and practicing active listening. Definitely an unexpected fun activity involved playing with Legos. Working in teams, we used Legos to demonstrate that breaking tasks into steps and dividing responsibilities can make accomplishing goals easier. To further develop our skills, we even incorporated some dance moves to work on our multitasking abilities, highlighting the importance of relying on a team member when overwhelmed with responsibilities. It is always a pleasure to work with The 80th Street team members. They are open to new ideas of learning and practicing their skills as a team.

  • Kelly and I have had the opportunity to partner with The 80th Street Residence for more than seven years. We love the opportunity to train in small groups and change up the environment to make it fun, too. You don't always have to train in a classroom. We take advantage of all spaces residents visit so they can support them in actual, real-life situations. We had the opportunity to practice with these ladies on how it may feel to have visual changes such as: ---Slower adaptation to changes in light ---Limited peripheral vision ---Difficulty judging distances Spending the afternoon with these ladies was refreshing. We love working with teams that are enthusiastic about learning. Kelly and I always walk away re-energized and excited knowing how many fantastic care managers are partnered with clients living with cognitive change.

  • This month, Inspired Memory Care, Inc and The 80th Street Residence proceeded with their monthly, immersive continuing education series. This time, the session centered around trauma-informed care. Using Embodied Labs® technology, participants embodied Harold, a veteran experiencing heightened symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder during the aging process. Participants discussed screening and assessing for post-traumatic stress disorder in older adults and those living with comorbid dementia, common triggers for trauma-related symptoms, ways in which the healthcare system may retraumatize its members or mitigate their trauma, and evidence-based interventions and resources to support healing for communities impacted by comorbid trauma and dementia. There were many insightful comments and resources shared throughout the session. Is your organization incorporating trauma-informed care practice into your approach? Share your best practices or resources in the comments!
