JFF’s Kathryn (Uhl) Kurani and Meredith Hills joined the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation in Mexico City last week for “Collaboration Across Place: Building a Better Future with Opportunity Youth,” the Hilton Opportunity Youth Initiative’s first-ever global convening with national advocacy partners and youth leaders from the initiative’s participating sites, including those in Los Angeles, New Orleans, Mexico City, and Mombasa. Young leaders from across these geographies discussed how to design education and workforce programs that are more attuned to their needs and the needs of “opportunity youth,” or young people who are disconnected from both school and work. The conference offered a valuable opportunity to learn from a diverse array of perspectives on topics that are important to this generation of youth and young adults and to our workforce and education systems, such as youth direct service providers, community engagement, policy, advocacy, and employer engagement. Thank you to the entire Conrad N. Hilton Foundation Opportunity Youth Initiative team for hosting such an informative and exciting experience! #OYGlobalConvening #GenZ #wkdev #education #policy #pathways

Many companies have built generative AI tools to assist jobseekers and the organizations that support them. New research from JFF’s Center for AI and the Future of Work identifies areas of both saturation and opportunity for new solutions that drive economic advancement. For example, there is a crowded market for resume and cover letter builders but few tools that help jobseekers translate their experiences into skills aligned with employer priorities — new AI tools could help people with relevant, but uncredentialed, lived experiences align their backgrounds to meet the requirements employers look for in candidates. The transition to a green, decarbonized economy has the potential to create nearly 400 million new jobs by 2030. 🌏 Despite this unprecedented economic opportunity, access to quality green jobs and emerging training pathways is limited, especially people facing systemic barriers to quality jobs. "Our motto is ‘Do no harm.’ We never want someone to go through a training for a job that they could never get due to what many times can be an arbitrary policy barrier, particularly for a justice-impacted individual." - Kristina Kent, director of workforce programs, Greater New Orleans Foundation. Kristina, along with other members of our Quality Green Jobs Regional Challenge, recently connected with JFF to explore shared opportunities and visions for a just-transition to a green economy.
