Just before sunrise on July 26th, the John Mini Distinctive Landscapes team planted the final four palm trees of the iconic Winter Garden. It was an honor to work alongside my teammates and all collaborators that made this project a success. This plantings was three years of sweat equity in the making, culminating in a precise 2 week long, overnight, installation. Three things we're proud to be a part of; 🌴 The opportunity to support a visionary client, Brookfield Place New York. Brookfield Properties envisioned this space in the late 80's. We've partnered with them to install and horticulturally care for these trees for over three decades. Their vision and ongoing commitment to this space has woven the Winter Garden into the fabric of New York, beloved by all that visit. 🌴 By the one-year anniversary of 9/11, the Winter Garden was reconstructed. It was an incredible feat by Brookfield, contractors and all stakeholders involved. Our team sourced, acclimated and planted a new set of palms. The reconstruction of this space, and the palm tree replanting, became a symbol of resilience and perseverance. It was a message told across the country with media coverage that included the front page of the The New York Times. The message was, that just like these palm trees, we'd always stand tall in the face of adversity. We replant these trees every ~10 years for safety and horticulture reasons. Internally, we practice storytelling to ensure this legacy of perseverance carries on through each set of palm trees we stand tall in the Winter Garden. 🌴 This project remains one of the most complex indoor landscapes in the country. We measure this by; ➡The narrow margin for error in regard to horticulture. ➡Precision in data collection, tracking and horticultural analysis/testing during a multi-year sourcing and acclimation period. ➡Environmental challenges of multi-year sourcing: tree finding in summer Florida heat, wildlife: snakes, fire ants, ticks, wild boars, and tree finding in grass overgrowth to shoulder height at times. ➡Acclimating trees that were taller than any pre-existing shade house and through multiple hurricane seasons. ➡The narrow margin for error and constraints during site installation. The periodical execution of this project reaffirms our team's capabilities in each generation of John Mini teammates. A team always ready to take on a project that allows us to thoughtfully push the limits in our craft. Enjoy some pictures from moments of the project. In this recurring episode of the #JohnMiniPodcast we are joined by Liana Hutcheon and Jack Harris from the John Mini Distinctive Landscapes team. Together their experience working on interior landscapes is just shy of 50 years. In this conversation they’ll share their perspective on the importance of indoor landscapes and horticulture in the built environment. Shifts over past decades, how indoor plants moved beyond a trend and into an integral part of interior design, an indoor landscape’s connection to the concept of biophilia, and how interiorscapes speak to a client’s brand and values. Give it a listen —-> https://lnkd.in/gwFzDV4M Thank you for taking the time to tune in. —— #JohnMini #podcast #biophilia #indoorlandscapes #interiorscapes #interiordesign #horticulture
