Caring for adults with #CongenitalHeartDisease and electrical #heart problems is challenging, due to their complex and unique anatomy. Dr. Aronis, director of the Adult Congenital Heart Disease Complex Ablation Program, collaborates monthly with electrophysiologists, cardiac surgeons, and imaging specialists to discuss and manage these complex cases. For example, a woman in her 40s needed a #pacemaker for conduction system pacing to restore a normal heartbeat. Born with her ventricles flipped, a childhood surgery also reversed her atria. Using a 3D-printed model of her heart, Dr. Aronis mapped out the procedure and cut the estimated procedure time from six hours to about three. https://bit.ly/4dvQuhe

Heart failure with a preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) represents more than half of all #DeartFailure world-wide. New #JohnsHopkins study has revealed the impact of #obesity on muscle structure in HFpEF patients. Researchers found notable ultrastructural abnormalities were particularly present in tissue of the most obese patients who had HEpEF, which had mitochondria that were swollen, pale, and disrupted, had many fat droplets, and their sarcomeres appeared tattered. https://bit.ly/3SFQXW5

"Our findings show that matched donors—available to only a minority of patients with #SickleCellDisease—are no longer required for cure of the disease with allogeneic transplantation," says Robert Brodsky, #JohnsHopkins director of #hematology and study co-leader. "Reduced-intensity haploidentical #BoneMarrowTransplant is a safe, curative therapy suitable for adults with sickle cell disease who also have complications related to their disease, such as organ damage, stroke or pulmonary hypertension, making it a treatment option for many more patients." https://bit.ly/3yjqKWz

#JohnsHopkins scientists have generated a new catalog of human gene expression data from around the world. The increased representation of understudied populations should empower researchers to attain more accurate insights into the genetic factors driving human #diversity, including traits such as height, hormone levels, and disease risk. https://bit.ly/3LElqjw

Current gene therapies to treat #SickleCellDisease are complex, time-consuming, and are sometimes linked to serious side effects like infertility or blood cancer. To address these challenges, #JohnsHopkins researchers have developed special nanoparticles that can send gene treatment directly to various types of cells in #BoneMarrow to correct the disease-causing mutations. https://bit.ly/4bQYkkt
