About us
The Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN) at King’s College London is Europe’s largest centre for research and education in psychiatry, psychology, and basic and clinical neuroscience. It produces more highly cited outputs (top 1% citations) on psychiatry and mental health than any other centre (SciVal 2021), and on this metric has risen from 16th (2014) to 4th (2021) in the world for highly cited neuroscience outputs. In the 2021 Research Excellence Framework (REF), 90% of research at the IoPPN was deemed ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ (3* and 4*). World-leading research from the IoPPN has made, and continues to make, an impact on how we understand, prevent and treat mental illness, neurological conditions, and other conditions that affect the brain.

Two new studies of smartphone habits in teenagers have identified links between problematic smartphone use (PSU) and depression, anxiety and insomnia. 16-18-year-olds with PSU were twice as likely to experience anxiety and almost three times as likely to experience depression as their peers without PSU. Increases in PSU among 13–16-year-olds over a four-week period was linked increases in anxiety, depression and insomnia. However, many young people are already using strategies to reduce their smartphone use, and one in eight 16-18-year-olds want help to reduce their use. The studies were published in Acta Paediatrica and BMJ Mental Health and funded by NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC). Watch the video below to hear from lead and senior authors Professor Ben Carter and Dr Nicky Kalk 👇 🔗 Read the full story - https://lnkd.in/e2eHm9Tk #Smartphones #TeenMentalHealth #MentalHealth #iPhone #Samsung #TeenSelfCare #MentalHealthResearch #TikTok #Instagram King's College London | The King's Maudsley Partnership | King's Health Partners | NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research)

Congratulations to Professor Juan Burrone and Dr Ivo Lieberam! Their research into axonal dysfunction in neurodegeneration has received £3.9 million from the MRC and MND Association. The project will systematically investigate an early disease pathology in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and design new therapeutic strategies. "We are very grateful to the MRC and MND Association for funding our proposal. This is an exciting collaborative project that aims to understand the cellular pathologies behind ALS/FTD to identify a new therapeutic angle. We will focus on the early stages of the disease — before axons degenerate, but when their function is already compromised. Our aim is to rescue axon function in the hope of preventing neurodegeneration.", said Professor Juan Burrone. Read the story ⬇

An interdisciplinary team from the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience and the Department of Physics have uncovered new information about how neurons age. The scientists pinpointed how different areas of the neuron age differently, which could lead to greater understanding of how neurodegenerative diseases like ALS and Alzheimer’s function and how they’re distinguished from healthy aging. Our latest blog post came from Wolfson SPaRC (Sensory, Pain and Regeneration Centre). Earlier this month, they hosted 11 students ages 16 to 20 sponsored by the Biochemical Society to experience real-life laboratory work. These are A-level students interested in studying science at a degree level and considering a career in biomedical science or medicine. The work experience aims to give them a glimpse into the day-to-day laboratory work through practical demonstrations and seminars. 🔗 ⬇
