Student journalists are journalists. Period. They deserve the same access to legal advice and guidance when reporting. That's why we are proud to support the Student Press Law Center as it celebrates its 50th anniversary. A big thank you to my thought partners in this space in Gary Green, Josh Moore, Richard Watts, and Meg Little Reilly. https://lnkd.in/eVWqaJXd

This morning, Knight Foundation sponsored a discussion about free speech on college campuses, hosted by Axios in Washington, DC. We just released our latest study on college student attitudes towards free speech – a topic Knight has studied since 2016. As a longitudinal study, it highlights the evolving, complex, and sometimes contradictory perspectives college students hold. One notable finding is a 30 percent drop in the number of students who feel freedom of speech rights are secure. This issue should concern all of us, especially college administrators, whose job it is to create environments for open inquiry and much-needed debate on critical issues. I was proud to listen to Ashley Zohn emphasize the importance of student voices. Students overwhelmingly value free speech but feel it is becoming harder to express themselves freely. Zohn stated, “We want campus leaders to hear that students are struggling. They want to figure out how to balance free speech principles with their own discomfort with speech and what it means to hear and discuss ideas they disagree with. We hope that colleges will lean in to help students express their ideas and engage in productive dialogue.” Keith E. Whittington, Timothy Heaphy, and Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) discussed the need to protect free speech on campus. Whittington underscored the critical challenge saying, “Universities are a bit of a bellwether about the nature of free speech in society. If you can't have free and vibrant public discussions on a university campus, it really says bad things about American society as a whole." I couldn't agree more. Over seventy years ago, John S. and James L. Knight of Knight Newspapers founded the Knight Foundation, believing that a well-informed community is essential for a thriving democracy. Freedom of speech and the press are crucial to this vision. Alongside our grantmaking, we support research that amplifies public voices, with our longest-running series focusing on attitudes towards free expression, making it one of our most impactful studies. In 2016, 73% of college students felt their free speech was protected. Fast forward to 2024, and that number has plummeted to 43%. What’s driving this dramatic change? Our latest Knight-Ipsos study elevates students’ voices and sheds light on how they view free expression on campus. As we approach the 2024 election and witness global conflicts impacting campus dialogues, hearing and understanding the perspectives of young people is crucial. The study reveals a nuanced picture of student attitudes–showing they value free speech but feel stifled in their ability to express themselves. Nice to appear alongside Katerina Eva Matsa with Mike Blinder to discuss some of Pew Research Center's terrific work and how it impacts what it is we do at Knight Foundation.
"When media is presented with new opportunities, we tend to look at it as a threat first and an opportunity second. We've got to start looking at things as an opportunity first and a threat second,” Jim Brady of Knight Foundation & Katerina Eva Matsa of Pew Research Center. #NewsMedia #SocialMedia #Journalism https://lnkd.in/ecAVqPQi

How will AI shape the future of content moderation? Yoel Roth, Head of Trust & Safety at Match Group and former Knight Visiting Scholar at the University of Pennsylvania, says we need AI models that can navigate the nuances of human communication–calling for more research into its effectiveness. At Knight, we understand that media and technology are critical components of our democracy. We recognize that the growth of a digital public sphere includes both possibilities and challenges as it connects people with information and each other. Since 2019, we have committed more than $94 million to catalyze a field of research that can improve our understanding of, and proactively inform policy to address, the growing role of digital media in our democracy.
