Freedom finally arrived on June 19, 1865, when approximately 2,000 Union troops landed in Galveston Bay, Texas. They brought with them the news that more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free by executive decree. This historic day came to be known as "Juneteenth" by the newly freed people in Texas. The troops' arrival marked a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end of slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday. On June 17, 2021, Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday.
