About us
Founded in 1931 on the belief that the biggest scientific challenges are best addressed by teams, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and its scientists have been recognized with 16 Nobel Prizes (lbl.gov/people/excellence/nobelists/). Today, Berkeley Lab researchers develop sustainable energy and environmental solutions, create useful new materials, advance the frontiers of computing, and probe the mysteries of life, matter, and the universe. Scientists from around the world rely on the Lab’s facilities for their own discovery science. Berkeley Lab is a multiprogram national laboratory, managed by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science.

The #JGI2024 Annual Genomics of Energy & Environment Meeting brings together leaders from diverse disciplines to highlight how they are addressing the world’s most pressing energy and environmental challenges. Talks emphasize how our research infrastructure — DNA sequencing, synthesis, metabolomics, data analysis, and new technology developments — advances research goals throughout the world. Hear from some of last year's attendees — Bruce Hungate of Northern Arizona University, Serina Robinson of Eawag, Jerry Tuskan of Oak Ridge National Laboratory and Aditi Sengupta, Ph.D., PMP® of Pacific Northwest National Laboratory — about what this gathering so special. A group of researchers, including Greg Hura and Kathryn Burnett from #BioMBIB's ALS-ENABLE program and SYBYLS group collaborated on a project looking for small molecules that would stimulate the conformational change of a protein involved in programmed cell death (apoptosis) from a monomer into a dimer, thereby inhibiting the protein. They used the pipeline to screen 2,500 small-molecule drug candidates for this ability. https://lnkd.in/gfVvvUgB Berkeley Lab

Did you know that researchers from Lehigh University and Berkeley Lab have developed an Accelerating Sparse Accumulation (ASA) architecture, specialized computer hardware that enables faster computation on sparse matrices—datasets with many zero values? Their published work has led to a provisional patent, and the ASA architecture could accelerate a variety of valuable algorithms, including those impacting future metagenomic research.
