This #BlackBusinessMonth, LISC celebrates our impact with Oak and Ave Property Group, a Black-owned housing developer based in Spartanburg, SC. Ranked the 12th fastest-growing place in the country by U.S. News & World Report, Spartanburg is facing increased pressure on #affordablehousing, making homeownership challenging for many longtime Black residents. Read how LISC Upstate South Carolina, with support from TD and Wells Fargo, provided financing and technical expertise to help Oak and Ave increase homeownership among Black families in the city: https://lnkd.in/ef3QDvqz

We're excited to be part of Reimagining Childcare. This is a great opportunity to bring our experience in child care and housing together. We'll be sharing more in the coming months.
Our next Reimagining Childcare (RCC) Grantee Spotlight is the Local Initiatives Support Corporation (LISC)! Together with residents and partners, LISC helps forge resilient and inclusive communities of opportunity across America–great places to live, work, visit, do business and raise families. For more than two decades, LISC has worked to build the supply of quality child care and early learning infrastructure, in the form of facilities development and organizational capacity-building, through technical assistance, grant-making and loan financing. LISC’s work with RCC is a partnership between LISC National Child Care & Early Learning and LISC Phoenix with support from the Affordable Housing and Income & Wealth Building national programs. Home-based child care educators are often the most convenient and affordable option for many households, but rising housing costs are exacerbating financial hardship and survival of these critical community resources. The RCC Study, funded by RWJF, tells the story of how LISC is facilitating relationships with home-based childcare providers and key partners to develop avenues to housing and financial stability for child care providers. By amplifying the voices and needs of providers, LISC’s aim to build power and stability for providers which will contribute to a resilient child care sector, improve high quality learning environments for children, and lead to sustainable wealth-building. One Chicago family’s legacy is the vegan, soul food restaurant Soul Veg City, owned by Lori Seay. It was founded by her father more than 40 years ago to serve delicious, healthy food to residents on the South Side of #Chicago. Seay and her brother, Arel, have been running the business for a decade, serving smoothies, ‘Zesty Cauliflower Wingz’ and a rotating menu of creative dishes, eager to serve the community while remaining competitive in the current economy. “Many black businesses don’t survive the second generation,” shared Seay. “But the dedication my dad had, he put that in us. We had to learn everything from scratch: the taxes, licensing. Nothing came easy.” With support from Greater Chatham Initiative, a business development organization supported by LISC and the #KrogerFoundation, Seay is finding the connections and expert advice she needs to grow her business, which recently expanded to a second location. Over the past year, Seay has accessed GCI resources on menu design, employee retention, marketing, and social media. “We’ve done everything we could to expand our growth and the opportunities are there to keep growing,” said Seay. “Soul Veg City won’t end with the next generation.” LISC Chicago
