Last month, our community partner, United Way of Greater Los Angeles Mentorship Program reached a milestone, supporting first-gen college students of color. Mentees praised the program for boosting their college and career readiness through mentorship and essential skills training. Joy Brown, a Los Angeles City College student, highlighted the program's impact on her journey, overcoming insecurities and gaining networking opportunities and financial support. Part of UWGLA's Community College Success Initiative, the program aims to double BIPOC graduation rates in L.A. through mentorship and academic support. Corporate volunteers from EY and Bank of America found mentoring fulfilling, helping mentees achieve education and career goals. On June 4, Miguel A. Santana delivered a motivational speech at the Los Angeles City College Commencement. As a proud first-generation graduate, Miguel shared his inspiring educational journey along with words of wisdom and empowerment to the LACC Class of 2024. Congratulations to all the graduates and their families on this special achievement!
We extend our heartfelt congratulations to our President and CEO, Miguel A. Santana, for his feature in the Los Angeles Times as one of “L.A.’s Influential Connectors.” The piece noted, "When L.A.’s civic leaders are confronted with a financial problem, a hiring challenge, or even a full-blown humanitarian crisis, they turn to Miguel Santana for help.” The son of Mexican immigrants raised in Bell Gardens, Miguel’s exemplary career in public service has included advising on critical issues like immigration and affirmative action and managing the City of LA’s $9 billion budget through the Great Recession while reshaping its homelessness and housing policies. Now, as President and CEO of the California Community Foundation, he continues to advocate for a civic agenda that supports the thriving of all Angelenos. We commend Miguel for his outstanding contributions and steadfast commitment to creating a more equitable Los Angeles. About the Project: L.A. Influential is a new LA Times project showcasing individuals shaping Los Angeles. Read the feature here: https://shorturl.at/jbuHD #Leadership #PublicService #CommunityImpact #LAInfluential

Students were led through a lively session which demonstrated the do’s and do nots of interviewing. They then took turns interviewing each other to practice what they had learned. Los Angeles City College celebrated #EarthDay at its urban farming community garden. Seeded by Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), the space offers students the ability to learn and practice gardening skills directly on campus. The garden gives a respite from a busy campus in the middle of the city, providing fresh, organic fruits and vegetables. The City's Garden continues to bring people together and create a habitat for wildlife.
