Learning to read is a crucial milestone in every child’s life. Yet nearly 90% of children in Sub-Saharan Africa are unable to read by age 10. The Luminos program unlocks the light of learning in thousands of children each year, enabling them to learn critical foundational literacy and numeracy skills, and transition into government schools. Our students, teachers, and the communities that surround them are overcoming daunting obstacles to achieve incredible things. Explore our 2023 Annual Report to read their inspiring stories! > https://lnkd.in/eMu773eV Pictured: Luminos alum, Omaar. We envision a world where no child is denied the chance to learn.
About us
Our vision is of a world where no child is ever denied the chance to learn. In Sub-Saharan Africa, 9 in 10 children do not learn to read by age 10. Children who are out of primary school are uniquely challenged to develop vital foundational skills and keep up with educated peers over time. Our mission is to ensure all children have equal access to joyful, foundational learning, especially those shut out of education by crisis, poverty, or discrimination. To date, Luminos has enabled 277,787 out-of-school children to get a second chance to learn. Luminos currently operates classrooms in parts of Sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East where students live in very challenging circumstances.

Effective accelerated programs can be a critical tool in tackling learning loss and closing #education access gaps. Yet, despite good faith efforts, global education funding is rarely directed towards education interventions that have a proven positive impact on children’s learning. In our latest blog, Luminos VP of Programs Dr. Kirsty Newman shares three recommendations for maximizing the impact of investments in accelerated learning: 🎯 Scale what is working already. 🎯Simplify to succeed. 🎯Choose impact metrics wisely. We do not need a new silver bullet to solve the learning crisis. 🌍📚 In a new #WorldEducationBlog, we highlight three steps to improve learning: commit, measure, iterate. Let’s embrace these key steps to create a future where all children achieve joyful, foundational learning. GEM Report UNESCO, Kirsty Newman, Kirstin Buchanan Read it here 👇
🔴 Globally, 250 million children are out of school, and millions more attend school without learning. This crisis is projected to cost USD 10 trillion annually by 2030. In sub-Saharan Africa, 90% of children cannot read by age 10. Tackling this issue requires more than a one-size-fits-all solution. Effective education depends on how strategies are implemented. Luminos Fund identifies three essential steps to drive student learning outcomes: commit, measure, and iterate. 1️⃣ Commit. Governments and donors must make learning outcomes their top priority. 2️⃣ Measure. The next step is assessing whether students are acquiring foundational skills. Accurate, real-time data is crucial for understanding student progress and making necessary adjustments. 3️⃣ Iterate. Data also guides decisions to enhance learning outcomes. Effective education involves careful research, thoughtful design, disciplined implementation, and continuous iteration. ➡️ Explore more in the #WorldEducationBlog by Dr. Kirsty Newman and Kirstin Buchanan, Luminos Fund: https://bit.ly/4dxu13j

Now that classes for the 2023-24 school year have ended, we’re thrilled to support our students' transition to government schools to continue their #education! In #Ghana, Luminos students concluded their placement assessments last week. The Luminos accelerated learning program helps previously out-of-school children to catch up on the first three years of school in just one school year. At the end of the program, students typically transition into grades 3 or 4, joining their peers. Congrats to our 2023-24 cohort of students!🎉📚

🌍👩🏫There is a global teacher shortage. New research by the Center for Global Development investigates teacher turnover in low-income countries: rural areas see more teachers transferring to urban areas, and teachers working in conflict-affected regions are more likely to quit teaching entirely. The Community Teachers element of the #LuminosMethod details our response to this global challenge. We believe minimally trained, but well-supported teachers drawn from the same low-income communities we serve can play a critical role in filling the teacher gap and reaching the most vulnerable children. 🌍Globally, millions of children are out of school, and millions more are in school and not learning. UNESCO estimates by 2030, this could cost US $10 trillion annually. The cost of inaction is high. The Luminos Fund's mission to ensure all children have equal access to joyful, foundational learning has never been more urgent. Explore the full report by UNESCO, OECD - OCDE, and the Commonwealth Secretariat on the global costs of children and youth not learning. > https://bit.ly/3zVKO1m

Luminos students in #Liberia have achieved remarkable learning gains, with the support of our #communityteachers! James became a Luminos teacher to be able to give back to his community. His favorite activity is phonics “because it helps the students to read faster.” “My dream for my students is for them to read and write well. If they are able to read well, I trust that they will perform in government schools,” says James. “My personal dream is to become a school administrator. I enjoy working with students and seeing them develop.” We are grateful for dedicated #communityteachers, like James, who play a critical role in making the Luminos program work!

Our 2023 Annual Report highlights inspiring stories from the 2023-24 school year! Meet Haftom, a Luminos student in Tigray, #Ethiopia who is catching up on years of learning lost to conflict and gaining confidence in a joyful Luminos classroom. "I came to school without any knowledge. I didn’t know if I could learn. But as I kept coming, I continued to learn from the lessons, and that made me very happy to come to school,” says Haftom. In Tigray, where war devastated the region and disrupted #education for millions of children, our program includes trauma-healing, an emphasis on socio-emotional learning, and midday meals to address the significant food insecurity.
