In today's ever-evolving media landscape, independent newsrooms face the challenge of standing out and connecting with their communities. For small teams, effective measurement of success in these areas can be a challenge - but the right tools and training can turn these challenges into opportunities for impact. PJMF Partner Tiny News Collective is building a data and metrics program to provide support for startup newsrooms, helping them use their limited time and resources in the best possible way. With the help of organizations like Tiny News Collective, the broader ecosystem of journalism is better equipped to be effective and impactful. Using artificial intelligence (AI) in the context of criminal justice introduces a variety of challenges and risks. But when leveraged in a responsible manner that’s grounded in human rights, AI can help judges, lawyers, and civil society access the data, knowledge, and empowerment they need to deliver justice for survivors of gender-based violence (GBV) and create open mechanisms for detecting and preventing further instances of GBV at scale. Organizations like DataGénero - Observatorio are working in Latin America to build mechanisms for gender equity and justice through AI, intersectional education, and collaborative approaches. Please join us on Thursday, August 15th at 1pm EST for a timely and poignant conversation between Ivana Feldfeber, the Co-founder and Executive Director at DataGénero, and Yolanda Botti-Lodovico, the Storytelling and Advocacy Lead at The Patrick J. McGovern Foundation. They will discuss how their team is using AI to expand our awareness of GBV in Argentina, the importance of infusing our global AI and data ecosystem with a broad commitment to transfeminism, and how humans working in partnership can promote justice and equity for all persons, regardless of their gender identity and/or sexual orientation. #artificialintelligence #ai #gender #genderequity #intersectionality #feminism #transfeminism #socialimpact #criminaljustice #humanrights #justice #technology #data #techforgood #aiforgood #publicpolicy #philanthropy #nonprofits

Freedom of the press and accessibility to authentic news are fundamental in a healthy democracy - and robust new technical and social responses are needed to build trust and defend journalistic freedom. PJMF partner Committee to Protect Journalists combats misinformation by supporting and defending journalists who report the news despite facing tremendous risks. Last month, CPJ released a report detailing testimonials from journalists who fled due to work-related persecution. Find the report here: https://loom.ly/xAiU15o #JournalistProtection #MediaFreedom

With over 122 million renter households in the U.S., housing decisions increasingly rely on AI-enabled tools—with limited transparency about how tenant screening companies work. When AI tools intersect with communities’ access to fundamental rights like housing, they deserve scrutiny from civil society, and a collaborative approach from technology providers to promote more human-centered outcomes. New research from PJMF partner TechEquity does just that, shedding light on the growing AI-powered tenant screening industry. Automated screening tools disproportionately impact low-income and vulnerable renters, highlighting the urgent need for transparency and equity in housing screening processes.
