Streeter Associates recently completed a new experimental lab addition at Cornell University’s Wilson Synchrotron Laboratory Building. Wilson Lab is home to a state-of-the-art synchrotron radiation facility. The main component of this facility, also referred to as Cornell’s High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS), is a half-mile long sub-terrain particle acceleration ring. The 17,500 square-foot two-story addition houses High-Magnetic Field (HMF) technology that will supplement the synchrotron’s x-ray beam. This technological combination is the first of its kind in such a facility. This addition includes 7,500 square-feet of high bay space, containing an overhead bridge crane, to house three new x-ray beam lines and the HMF. Support Lab spaces will occupy the rest of the footprint around the high bay area and offer easier access to the synchrotron. Structurally, the addition was built into the side of the hill, south of Campus Road. Nearly 3,000 yards of regular and specialty concrete was used to retain the hillside terrain and provide shielding against any potential radiation. Concrete piers were also poured below grade to tie the building foundation to the bedrock below. The building is designed to support an additional two floors over the entire building footprint, if more space is needed at a future date. The building’s exterior is clad in masonry that helps blend it with the gorge of the bordering Cascadilla Creek.
