  • Memorial Park Conservancy will forever appreciate Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee's steadfast support of and friendship towards Memorial Park. Her commitment to Houston, parks, and Memorial Park will always be cherished and remembered. Most recently, Congresswoman Jackson Lee took part in the ribbon-cutting event for the Kinder Land Bridge and Cyvia and Melvyn Wolff Prairie in February 2023. Congresswoman Jackson Lee was also a champion of the U.S. Army's 24th Infantry Regiment, African American soldiers who were stationed in Houston to guard the construction of the former WWI training site, Camp Logan; part of that land later became Memorial Park. Following the tragic events of August 23, 1917, 110 of these soldiers were wrongfully convicted of mutiny and murder, and many were executed. On November 23, 2023, the U.S. Army made the historic decision to set aside these convictions and restore honor to these soldiers, writing a new chapter for our nation’s history. On August 23, 2017, Congresswoman Jackson Lee helped lead the rededication of the permanent marker in Memorial Park that honors these soldiers. Congresswoman Jackson Lee's support for Memorial Park’s past, present and future underscored her vision for a more vibrant and inclusive community. We will continue to honor her legacy by fostering spaces that celebrate diversity, promote unity, and provide opportunities for all Houstonians to connect with nature.

  • It has been more than two weeks since Hurricane Beryl passed through Houston, and the Conservancy is actively reassessing, repairing and reopening affected areas of Memorial Park. Dedicated staff members have remained at the front lines throughout the storm clean-up to keep Memorial Park accessible to Houstonians seeking a respite from the past few weeks' events. The impact of the recent weather events on the Park has been significant. These estimated numbers represent the assessed impact of Hurricane Beryl on the Park: - Hundreds of trees along roads and trails were lost or significantly damaged - Park structures damaged: one ravine bridge, a sidewalk, one pavilion, wetland boardwalks, and one stretching deck at the Roy H. Cullen Timing Track - The Park endured 10+ days without power in several areas As a nonprofit organization, public support remains crucial as the Conservancy continues to clean, repair and restore the Park in the wake of major weather events. We appreciate all our Memorial Park supporters! Please consider making a donation to our recovery fund: https://bit.ly/4dbptzm

Some of our leadership had the pleasure of attending the City Parks Alliance Greater & Greener Conference this week and hosting a peer-to-peer roundtable discussion. The session was titled “From Neglected Urban Wilderness to Resilient Gem: Transforming Houston’s Memorial Park.” The Greater & Greener Conference is dedicated to exploring the full potential of parks as city-building tools. We are grateful to be among this growing network of civic and community leaders, parks and recreation authorities, government agencies and others dedicated to urban parks across the nation. Here's an interpretive element at Memorial Park you might not know about! The Kinder Land Bridge West Mound was intentionally designed by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects to function as a solar compass, tracking and revealing the movement of the sun. From the center of the circular lawn, visitors can view markers of the precise locations where the sun will touch the horizon at sunrise on the solstices and equinoxes. This encourages an awareness of changing seasons and reminds us that we are all connected by forces much larger than ourselves. Have you ever noticed these features while exploring the land bridge?
