We are thrilled to invite you to the Community Reception for the exhibition of artwork created by the talented youth of the Justice Re-Imagined Youth Fellowship 2024. This fellowship, organized by Art from the Inside (AFTI), showcases the artistic expressions and visions of young people who have been impacted by the criminal justice system. Event Details: Date: Wednesday, July 17th, 2024 Time: 5:00 - 7:00 PM Venue: George Latimer Central Library, Downtown Saint Paul, MN - 90 West 4th Street Saint Paul, MN 55102 Light refreshments will be served. For the past five years, AFTI has exhibited the artwork of men and women within the Minnesota corrections system. Now, through the generous support of the Cultural Star Grant, we are excited to give a voice to youth affected by the criminal justice system. This first year of our fellowship featured 12 youth, ages 14-19, who attended 4 intensive workshops held at the Black Youth Healing Arts Center for four Saturdays. They engaged with art and legendary local artists to explore the power of art! This community exhibition will feature their creative works that honor their experiences and reimagines community safety and justice. We have been honored to have legendary local artists Ta-coumba T. Aiken, T. Mychael Rambo, and Willard Malebear work with our young artists, providing mentorship and inspiration. The exhibition will not only display the incredible artwork produced by these young individuals but also highlight their unique stories and perspectives. Will you join us for this community reception and exhibition? Please RSVP here: https://lnkd.in/gMGcMa8c Can't make it to the opening? EXHIBITION RUNS July 9 - July 31, 2024

In late June, the Department of Corrections helped with sandbagging efforts due to extensive flooding in Waterville, MN. Seventy-five incarcerated individuals from the minimum-security unit at Minnesota Correctional Facility-Faribault and staff spent several days assisting with flood relief efforts. More than 30 staff helped make this relief effort possible, some working side-by-side with incarcerated individuals in providing much-needed assistance to the community. Thank you to everyone who took part in these flood relief efforts! Staff and the group of incarcerated individuals expressed gratitude for the opportunity to give back and to support those impacted by these devastating floods.
