It’s hot outside, really hot. How do our raptors at Meadowside Nature Center keep cool with the temperature rises? Due to their carnivorous diet, they don’t really need to drink water to stay hydrated, but they do look for ways to cool down. Some take a dip in the water; others visit a bird bath. And some, like Scarlet, enjoy being misted from a garden hose. Check out this article from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) to learn how raptors keep cool: https://lnkd.in/eG5QnA-n

Camp Stories Summer is in full swing, and chances are, that if there are kids in your life, at least part of their summer includes camp—day camp, sports camp, adventure camp, sleepaway camp, and on from there. Did you know that there was once a very popular Girl Scouts camp at Rockwood Special Park? In the mid-20th century, troops would come all over to hike, experience nature, and visit historic sites in nearby D.C. The camp was also special at the time, because it was integrated at time when many local council camps were not. Visit the Untold Stories webpage to learn more about how girl scouts stopped the Girl Scouts of the USA from selling this beloved property to developers in the 1970s: https://lnkd.in/epEp_KiV Photo caption: Girl Scout leaders often used Rockwood for their camp training courses Courtesy Girl Scout Council of the Nation’s Capital

Discover the White-throated Sparrow this #FloraAndFaunaFriday! These charming birds stand out with a distinctive white throat patch and a yellow spot near their eyes. Larger than many sparrows at 7 inches long, featuring a forked tail and blackish bill. In Maryland, they migrate from the North in late October and stay through late April to early May, favoring open deciduous woods and residential areas with leafy ground cover. They forage on the ground for insects and seeds and are known for their noisy feeding habits. They are also frequent visitors to bird feeders in the fall and winter, when natural food resources are scarce, enjoying sunflower seeds and white millet. Breeding in central Canada and New England, they nest low to the ground or occasionally in conifers after ground nests are threatened by predators. Despite their abundance in winter habitats, these sparrows are facing declines in their breeding range up North. Let's appreciate and protect these beautiful birds!
