There are currently just 12 national park sites – out of 430 – dedicated to women. The Frances Perkins Center and NPCA believe the 13th site should honor the woman who brought us Social Security, minimum wage, the 40-hour work week, unemployment benefits, and bans on child labor: Frances Perkins. Perkins was the first woman in a presidential cabinet and a tireless advocate for social justice, economic security, and labor rights. From Theresa Pierno, NPCA's President and CEO to the Washington Post: “Frances Perkins is an extraordinary person that is deserving of national recognition. A true trailblazer, she fought tirelessly for working people and children, putting policies and programs into place that still stand today." #FrancesPerkins #ParkForPerkins #FutureParks #NationalParkNews #LaborRights #SocialJustice #NewDeal

100 miles northwest of Juneau, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve is a true Alaskan experience boasting 3.3 million acres of rugged snow-capped mountains, dynamic glaciers, emerald green forests, and deep sheltered fjords. The heart of visitor accommodations here is Glacier Bay Lodge Historic District, hosting 30,000 annual guests. Yet, there's a shortage of concession employee housing, meaning staff have been using otherwise rentable cabins at the historic lodge. Thanks to a $21 million investment from the #GreatAmericanOutdoorsAct, outdated concession housing will be replaced with a new multi-purpose building with a larger capacity, meeting current safety, fire, and accessibility standards. Hundreds of projects are underway to improve national parks for the staff who care for them and the visitors who enjoy them. One thing is clear: our parks need more help. Join NPCA in urging Congress to keep investing in our national parks and extend GAOA by at least five more years! https://lnkd.in/ej6auypb #GreatAmericanOutdoorsAct #GlacierBay #Alaska #ParkFunding #ProtectOurParks #ParkAdvocate

Our work lives would all look very different had it not been for Frances Perkins. As the first woman in a presidential cabinet, she was a pioneering advocate for social justice, economic security, and labor rights. Frances Perkins is the reason we have Social Security, minimum wage, the 40-hour work week, unemployment benefits, and bans on child labor. It’s time to honor her legacy with a national park site. Join the Frances Perkins Center and NPCA in calling on President Biden to designate the Frances Perkins Homestead a national monument and securing Frances Perkins’ place in history! #FrancesPerkins #ParkForPerkins #FutureParks #NationalParkNews #LaborRights #SocialJustice #NewDeal

NPCA is proud to sponsor the National APIAHiP Forum, from September 12-15, 2024, in Seattle, WA! This year's theme is "Building a National Coalition to Preserve Local Communities." Hosted by APIAHiP: Asian & Pacific Islander Americans in Historic Preservation, this forum will take place in Seattle's Chinatown International District, recently named one of the 11 Most Endangered Historic Places by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. This four-day event is designed to deepen our understanding and commitment to elevating Asian & Pacific Islander American heritage through historic preservation. Participants will engage with place-based experts, community leaders, and fellow enthusiasts from across the country, exploring the latest innovations, challenges, and opportunities in the field. They will also have the chance to participate in workshops on best practices in community-led preservation and enjoy guided tours of culturally significant sites in Seattle’s historic Chinatown International District and Bainbridge Island. Networking opportunities with leaders, advocates, and scholars in historic preservation will further enrich the experience. Don't miss this opportunity to engage with leaders and advocates in the field and to contribute to the ongoing conversation about preserving our rich cultural heritage. For as long as she can remember, Robin Roberts has loved the outdoors. When not working as a physical therapist in Philadelphia, she leads countless trips for friends, family and community members to explore national parks around the country. Outdoor activities such as camping and backpacking can offer life-changing experiences, but the cost of equipment often creates a significant barrier. That’s why Roberts, with the support of the Outdoors Empowered Network, NPCA and several gear companies, has launched the Philly Gear Library, a new initiative that breaks down the barriers to outdoor activities, making parks more accessible to all. For decades, Acadia’s Island Explorer buses have made it possible for millions of visitors to experience one of our country’s most iconic parks. But after years of underfunding, these shuttles have reached their breaking point. NPCA and partners helped secure critical funding to provide a new electric fleet and charging infrastructure so that millions of visitors can continue to access Acadia’s most popular destinations and connect to surrounding communities. This is a win-win for visitor experience, economic development and environmental health! #EV #Acadia #Maine #Transit #NationalParks #NationalParkNews #ParkFunding #ProtectOurParks

This weekend marks the fourth anniversary of the #GreatAmericanOutdoorsAct, a historic bipartisan investment in improving our national parks. Through 2025, GAOA's national park maintenance fund will continue to tackle essential repair projects in our national parks. However, this initial funding alone cannot fully address the impacts of decades of underinvestment, which have made these projects increasingly costly and challenging. To sustain the remarkable progress initiated by this act, NPCA is urging Congress to renew at least five additional years of the park maintenance funding to effectively safeguard our priceless natural and cultural resources and support the millions who visit them annually. On our blog, ten park projects underway from Arizona to New York thanks to investments from GAOA. #GreatAmericanOutdoorsAct #ParkFunding #FundOurParks #FixOurParks #ParkAdvocate #Conservation #NationalParks #NationalParkNews

Zion National Park turned 115 this week! More than 5 million people visit Zion's soaring red and pink sandstone cliffs each year, up from 2.8 million just ten years ago. The park's oldest campground, South Campground built in 1934, is full almost every night from March to October, but its facilities are in poor condition and have far exceeded their design life. An $11.3 million investment from the #GreatAmericanOutdoorsAct will ensure that Zion campers can enjoy this popular site long into the future. Hundreds of projects are underway to improve national parks for the staff who care for them and the visitors who enjoy them. One thing is clear: our parks need more help. It takes all of us to make a difference - Subaru of America, NPCA and our partners have been doing our part! Over nearly 10 years, we’ve kept more than 22 MILLION pounds of trash out of national parks like Denali, Grand Teton and Yosemite in coordination with the National Park Service, National Park Foundation, and community partners. Together, we achieved this through waste reduction, recycling, composting, and educational initiatives to engage park visitors on ways to lessen their environmental footprint. That’s a real commitment to clean, green sustainability for America’s most iconic places. #DontFeedTheLandfills https://lnkd.in/dUAj5QhB

Last month, hundreds gathered in Greenwich Village to celebrate the opening of the Stonewall National Monument Visitor Center and honor the "birthplace for Pride." Mark Segal was 18 when he wrote a call to arms during the Stonewall riots in June 1969. He curated an interpretive exhibit featured in the new visitor center and recently sat down with "The Secret Lives of Parks" co-host Jennifer Errick to talk about the uprising and how it shaped his lifetime of activism. Special thanks to Pride Live ! #NowListening #ParksPodcast #NewEpisode #ProtectOurParks #NationalParks #Stonewall #Pride #LGBTQHistory
