August 11th is Action Indonesia Day, which focuses on the conservation of four animal species that are all found only in Indonesia: babirusa, anoa, banteng, and Sumatran tigers. These animals are umbrella species, which means protecting their habitat preserves it for all native species. Some of these animals that benefit from habitat protection include the maleo, Peleng tarsier, and Javan hawk-eagle, all of which are endangered. One of the main issues these animals face is habitat loss. As humans expand logging, mining, and farming operations, forests are destroyed and animals are displaced. You can support the conservation of these animals by spreading awareness, buying sustainably sourced wood, not buying products made from these animals, as well as visiting AZA facilities like the GSC! #DYK On this day in 1958, NASA was founded, marking the beginning of incredible space exploration and discoveries! 🚀 🌌 While it's a rainy day here at the GSC, we're dreaming about sunny days and clear skies ☀️ What can you see on a clear day with a scope and a powerful solar filter? Last week, during a “Sunny Safari” public viewing, GSC guests got a glimpse of a solar prominence. This 20,000 °F stream of hot hydrogen reached as high above the Sun’s surface as a stack of about 8 Earths! 📸: Ron S., VP of Innovative Technology & Interpretation #GreensboroScienceCenter #VisitGSO #SunnySafari #SolarViewing #NASA

Happy Andean Bear Day! 🐻 Today, we celebrate Andean bears, the only bear species in South America, found in the Andes Mountain range across Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. These bears, also known as "spectacled bears," have unique facial markings that look like glasses, each as distinct as a fingerprint! Celebrate Andean Bear Day by purchasing "Is There a Bear Over There?", a children's book featuring Yana, an adventurous Andean bear. Join Yana on her journey through South America as she searches for her family and makes new friends along the way. This adorable book is illustrated by Jessica Hoffman, the GSC's VP of Animal Care and Welfare. With over 25 years of experience in the zoological field, Jessica has worked with various species across the U.S. Her love for animals began on a dairy farm in Wisconsin and grew through her studies in biology and wildlife. Alongside her scientific career, Jessica has a passion for watercolor painting, which led her to illustrate this book. Proceeds from "Is There a Bear Over There?" go to AZA's Andean Bear SAFE Program, supporting the conservation of this incredible species. You can also help Andean bears by purchasing Buy Bird Friendly® certified coffee, which helps protect their habitat. In February of 1976, the Sigmund Sternberger Health Theater welcomed its new resident, TAM (Transparent Anatomical Manikin). The life-sized transparent female mannequin was computer-controlled, and taught guests about the functions of various human body parts, using her own body (in which the part in question lit up) as a model. The Sigmund Sternberger Health Theater was devoted to human anatomy and physiology, with TAM as the central exhibit. #GreensboroScienceCenter #GSCRewind #TAM #TransparentAnatomicalManikin
