The process of direct heart donation, when the donor's family specifically names who the recipient will be, is incredibly rare. In fact, the procedure happened only twice in the entire country last year. One of those donations happened here at Nebraska Medical Center. NBC News anchor Kate Snow thought the story was so extraordinary, she recently visited the family in their hometown of Blair, NE to share it with viewers. The crew also came to the Nebraska Medical Center campus to speak with heart transplant surgeon John Um, MD, to get his perspective on how incredibly unique the entire process was. https://nbcnews.to/3yyLg5u

Sometimes the best birthday present is the one you give to yourself. For Annette Dunlop, whose birthday is Aug. 1, her belated birthday present to herself may be hard to top. That’s because Friday will be her final day of work, as the charge audit RN senior associate prepares for retirement life. Annette began her career in health care more than 30 years ago when she took her first job working in obstetrics in 1991 at Jennie Edmundson Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Then, in 1996, she accepted a job at the Clarkson Hospital working in obstetrics. In 2005, Annette’s career took a slight pivot. After having major back surgery that required her to step away from bedside nursing, she began her time working in Compliance. “I could see the benefit I could have on the organization by ensuring staff were documenting correctly when it came to services being delivered to patients, and if documentation wasn’t correct, it was an opportunity to educate about the importance of it for the patient and the hospital,” she says. “Annette’s warmth and dedication to her job is obvious and infectious,” says Stephanie Borst, Compliance manager. “She has cared fiercely for this team over the years, and although she will be deeply missed, we are excited for her and this new chapter in her life.” Annette is looking forward to spending time with family that includes her husband, five children and 18 grandchildren. She also plans to also enjoy her hobbies more, such as tending to her many gardens. From that first year in nursing to her final days working, Annette leaves grateful for the experiences she’s had. She has this advice for others. “Always be the best that you can be at whatever you do,” she says. “When I worked in patient care, I wanted to be the best nurse for that patient that I could be because I always had great experiences with nurses that I had when I had my babies. I always wanted to be that nurse patients would remember as being a great and someone who really helped.” #NebraskaMed #NebraskaMedicine #togetherextraordinary #seriousmedicineextraordinarycare
