With the help of local fishers, MCAF Project Leader Clemente Balladares is working to monitor and preserve sea turtle populations off the coast of Venezuela. Clemente’s work involves collaboration with local fishers to tag and measure sea turtles in the nearshore waters of the Gulf of Paria. By gathering information on sea turtle populations and fishery interactions, Clemente and local communities hope to ensure a brighter future for the turtles who call Venezuelan waters home. About us
The New England Aquarium is a catalyst for global change through public engagement, commitment to marine animal conservation, leadership in education, innovative scientific research, and effective advocacy for vital and vibrant oceans. It is the only Boston-based cultural institution with a mission focused primarily on the environment, promoting the importance of protecting the blue planet through innovative exhibits and educational programs. These are some highlights of the Aquarium’s mission in action, on exhibit, and through our education, conservation, and research programs here on Central Wharf and around the globe. -The Trust Family Foundation Shark and Ray Touch Tank and the New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center showcase the diversity and importance of marine animals. -The Giant Ocean Tank inspires visitors with the beauty and complexity of marine habitat through replication of a Caribbean coral reef. -Aquarium educators lead a nationwide initiative on climate change and inspire future ocean protectors with hands-on programs such as Harbor Discoveries Camps and live blue™ Ambassadors. -The Aquarium’s Marine Animal Rescue Team leads regional efforts to rehabilitate and release endangered species of sea turtles at our state-of-the-art Animal Care Center. -Aquarium scientists advise some of the nation’s largest seafood companies on methods to enhance the sustainability of commercial fisheries worldwide. -The Aquarium is home to the world’s longest-running right whale research program, coordinating efforts along the East Coast of the U.S. to restore the population of this endangered species. -The Aquarium collaborates with partners around the world to protect ocean ecosystems, such as coral reefs. In 2008, we partnered with the island nation of Kiribati and Conservation International to create the Phoenix Islands Protected Area. Five more rehabilitated sea turtles have gone home to the ocean! 🥹 Yesterday, Senator Edward J. Markey joined both Aquarium + Mass Audubon staff to help release rehabilitated sea turtles back into the ocean. After months of recovery at our Sea Turtle Hospital, four Kemp's ridley sea turtles and our largest loggerhead of the season were cleared for release, transported to Cape Cod, and guided into the ocean while dozens of onlookers gathered and cheered nearby. We were honored to have Senator Markey assist with this sea turtle release, as he has been instrumental in pushing forward the Sea Turtle Rescue Assistance and Rehabilitation Act (STRAA). The STRAA would help provide the federal funding for institutions across the country to continue sea turtle conservation efforts. This bipartisan legislation recently moved out of the Senate, which makes us one step closer to passing this bill! Thank you for your continued efforts, Senator Markey, and congratulations on a successful release to all involved! 👏🏽🐢 #SeaTurtleRelease #SeaTurtleRescueAssistanceAct #SeaTurtles

"Aquariums are crucial windows to a world that most children and adults don't get to see otherwise." Dr. Letise LaFeir, the Aquarium’s Chief of Conservation and Stewardship, spoke at this year's annual National Marine Educators Association (NMEA) conference to discuss the role of aquariums in conservation and stewardship. Letise shared how our visitor educators are masters of interpreting, educating, and inspiring people of all ages to take action for the ocean. She also discussed how aquariums can—and should—be places where people are inspired to become ocean champions. Way to go, Letise! 👏 #NMEA #NMEA2024 #NMEAConference

Marine biologist Jasmin Graham is coming back to the Aquarium! 📘 🌊 Join us on Monday, August 12, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the Simons Theatre for a book signing with Jasmin. In partnership with the Boston Harbor Women of Color Coalition, we will be celebrating her new memoir: Sharks Don't Sink. As a master’s student at the University of California Santa Cruz, MCAF Project Leader Daniela Font undertook a capstone project to study poorly known aspects of sea turtle bycatch in northern Argentina. She spent three months visiting fishers from the Buenos Aires coast and came away from the experience with many questions, including: “How can we facilitate the respectful exchange of knowledge between researchers and fishers?” Read more about Daniela's work and what she learned from her first-ever experience collaborating with local communities on conservation efforts: https://bit.ly/3yaMt2R #MCAF

Three cheers for our incredible Animal Care team! 🎉🎉🎉 This week is Zookeeper Appreciation Week or (as we like to call it) Animal Care Appreciation Week! We have dozens of talented and dedicated animal care staff here at the Aquarium, and we are immensely proud and grateful for each one of them. These 75 individuals care for our nearly 10,000 animals, clean exhibits, maintain our water quality, educate the public, and so much more. Check out some of these sweet behind the scenes moments with some of our Animal Care professionals, and show our team some love in the comments! #NationalZookeeperWeek #AnimalCare #ZookeeperAppreciationWeek #AnimalCareAppreciation #AnimalCareProfessionals

A round of applause for a successful and collaborative leatherback disentanglement! 👏🏽👏🏽 Last week, the Aquarium's Anderson Cabot Center for Ocean Life scientists and members of the Aquarium's Animal Health team + Sea Turtle Rescue and Rehabilitation staff worked with Center for Coastal Studies' disentanglement team and the Barnstable Harbormaster's office to respond to a report of a live, entangled leatherback sea turtle in Cape Cod Bay. The entangled leatherback turtle was estimated to be ~6 ft. long and 400 lb. 😮 The turtle was successfully disentangled, examined by our Animal Health team, and given satellite and acoustic tagging devices. These tags will allow our Anderson Cabot Center scientists to assess survivorship and long-term behavior of the leatherback. The turtle was then released back into the ocean with cheering onlookers nearby! Congratulations to all on a successful disentanglement! 🎊 Note: This response was conducted under NMFS permit # 21301-01 and funded by NOAA Bycatch Reduction Engineering Program. #AndersonCabotCenter #AndersonCabotCenterForOceanLife #LeatherbackSeaTurtles #SeaTurtleRescue #SeaTurtles
