Join us in congratulating nurse Deborah Acevedo on her incredible 45-year career at NewYork-Presbyterian. On August 2, Deborah’s colleagues surprised her with a retirement celebration and thanked her for her dedication to our patients and the communities we serve. Deborah spent her entire career at #NYP, serving 34 years as nurse in #NYPMorganStanley’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and more than a decade as a Community Outreach Clinical Coordinator for the #NYP Ambulatory Care Network. She leaves a lasting mark through the programs she helped bring to #NYP, including the Cuddler Program, which allows volunteers to hold and comfort NICU babies, and community initiatives at a women’s shelter. “It is a bittersweet moment because I really love what I do,” shared Deborah. Drop a 👏 to help us celebrate Deborah’s remarkable career and wish her happiness in her retirement. At 8 years old, Yasin Samad is already a “heart pioneer,” says his pediatric cardiologist Dr. Maria Thanjan of #NYPQueens. Born with a congenital heart condition called tetralogy of Fallot, Yasin had two open-heart surgeries before he turned 2. Then last year, he learned he would need a new valve. With his heart still growing, his options were limited. So, Yasin and his family decided to participate in a clinical trial at #NYPMorganStanley for a heart valve that can be expanded via a minimally invasive procedure as he grows. He is one of the first kids in the country to receive the new valve. “That was a little nerve-racking, but we felt like we were in good hands,” says Yasin’s dad, Adam. Thanks to his new valve, Yasin can now avoid multiple open-heart surgeries — and is back to running around with his friends. “No one can stop me,” he says proudly. Drop a 👏 emoji for Yasin, who is leading the way for kids with congenital heart disease. When Ahkianne Wanliss started experiencing abdominal pressure and back pain, the 32-year-old attorney and avid runner didn’t think it was anything serious since the symptoms were sporadic. Over the months, her symptoms increased and grew worse, and an ultrasound revealed she had a grapefruit-sized uterine fibroid, a noncancerous growth of the uterus. A friend recommended #NYPBrooklyn gynecologic surgeon Dr. Michael Lewis, who told her that the massive fibroid needed to be removed. The fibroid had grown so large that it was not only impacting her quality of life, but also her kidney function.“Dr. Lewis reassured me that this could be handled swiftly, and I’ll go back to feeling myself again,” says Ahkianne. Today, three months after her surgery, she is healthy and back to traveling and enjoying her regular activities. Says Ahkianne: “I feel lighter and more energetic, and I really do love to get out there for a run.” Learn more about Ahkianne’s story and what to know about uterine fibroids and their treatment:https://nyphosp.co/3A2TraI #FibroidsAwareness Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Weill Cornell Medicine
