Several Newmont employees from our operations in British Columbia – Brucejack and Red Chris – recently participated in the Tour de Telegraph in Tahltan Territory 🚲 An annual cycling fundraiser in support of the Dease Lake Recreation Centre, this event challenges riders to complete a 112-kilometer journey on unpaved Highway 51 – the only route connecting the Tahltan communities of Telegraph Creek and Dease Lake. Each year, this Tahltan-led event raises tens of thousands of dollars to upgrade important community infrastructure that brings people together year-round and serves as a great example of how industry and First Nations can partner to create value for communities. Our Senior Director of External Relations, Shari Gittleman, recently participated in two panels at Expanding Horizons, Initiatives in Art and Culture’s 14th International Gold + Diamond Conference. Sharing the stage with various industry voices, Shari spoke about several topics, including what our industry needs to achieve a just transition and how best to protect human and labor rights in the mining industry.   During the “Human and Labor Rights” panel, Shari highlighted three key tenets guiding Newmont’s approach to human rights: ➡️ Embed human rights cross-functionally – Human rights are everyone’s responsibility, and they cut across the business from human resources to environment to security. ➡️ Focus on our most salient issues – Our human rights due diligence approach is guided by those issues we identify as the most severe and where we have the greatest likelihood of impacting the rights of people. ➡️ Identify impacts to rightsholders – Newmont thinks comprehensively about the people we can impact, including our employees and contractors, workers in our supply chain and community members. Newmont’s Africa business unit has deployed the Cat® diesel electric R2900 XE hybrid loader at its Subika Underground mine in Ahafo South. The mining equipment, the first of its kind to be used in Africa, marks a significant milestone in Newmont’s commitment to reduce its global environmental footprint. “The new hybrid loader combines the power of diesel with the efficiency of electric technology to deliver a 31% improvement in fuel efficiency, translating into significant reductions in heat generation underground, fewer emissions, and a healthier working environment.” – David Thornton, Managing Director for Newmont’s business unit in Africa. Last week, Newmont employees, including Javier Velarde, Head, External Relations, Latin America and Caribbean, and Jorge Andrés Rincón Romero, Senior Manager of International Government Relations, attended an Americas Society/Council of the Americas reception, sponsored by Newmont, to commemorate the APEP (Americas Partnership for Economic Prosperity) Ministerial earlier in the day. Foreign ministers and ambassadors from the Americas, alongside State Department and White House leaders for the Western Hemisphere, attended the event with private sector representatives to advance discussions on how the US government, regional governments and companies can work together on common goals.
