About us

For 137 years, the ships built at Newport News Shipbuilding, like the American shipbuilders who built them, have served our nation in peace and war, in times of adversity and in times of abundance. Our legacy of “Always Good Ships,” includes the design, construction, overhaul and repair of more than 800 ships for the U.S. Navy and commercial customers. Today, Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of HII, is the nation’s sole designer, builder and refueler of nuclear-powered aircraft carriers and one of only two shipyards capable of designing and building nuclear- powered submarines. We also provide fleet services for naval ships. We are the largest industrial employer in Virginia, employing more than 25,000 people, many of whom are third- and fourth-generation shipbuilders.

#ThrowbackThursday to 10 years ago when Newport News Shipbuilding riggers hoisted a 30-ton anchor from inactivated aircraft carrier Enterprise (#CVN65) into place on USS Abraham Lincoln (#CVN72). Inspections during CVN 72’s refueling and complex overhaul, which was underway at NNS, found that the starboard anchor needed to be replaced. In August 2014, shipbuilders swapped the old anchor for an identical one from CVN 65. Enterprise’s anchor – cast in 1962 – continues to carry the legacy of the world’s first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier today as it serves on CVN 72.

Fourteen educators from across the region spent almost two weeks at Newport News Shipbuilding in July participating in our Teacher Internship Program. It offered hands-on exposure to longstanding shipyard trades, such as welding and pipefitting, as well as newer tools that use virtual or augmented reality. The goal is for the educators to return to their schools and spread the word about the vast career opportunities available at NNS. Thank you to all of the shipbuilders and educators who took part in this year’s program! I’m grateful for your important contributions to our pipeline of future talent. Our ethics and values are at the heart of who we are as shipbuilders. We were founded on the principle of “Always Good Ships” – of always accomplishing our work the right way. At all levels of NNS, it is our responsibility to keep this culture strong so that the US Navy always has the upper hand and always has confidence in the integrity of our work. Our nation is counting on all of us, and so are the moms, dads, spouses and children of our Navy sailors. Ethics starts with each of us. Our individual actions and behaviors can either strengthen – or weaken – our ethical culture in an instant. August is Ethics and Compliance Awareness Month across HII. It’s an opportunity to focus on the importance of our ethical culture and company values. On the surface, it is easy to say, “I am ethical and would always do the right thing.” I ask you to think deeper and self-reflect on the importance of integrity and ask yourself the following questions: 1. Am I fully committed to the integrity of my work, and do I understand the importance of raising my hand if I somehow fall short of company expectations for quality work? 2. How would I respond if I knew a good friend or teammate was behaving unethically at work, particularly on matters that could impact the safety of our shipbuilders and the sailors who depend upon us? I encourage you to share your self-reflections with your teammates and engage in a discussion with them for development and learning. I also want to remind you that if you know of questionable behavior or actions, you can anonymously report it, 24/7, through the HII OpenLine by calling 1-877-631-0020. Speaking up is not always easy, but as the builders of our nation’s most technologically advanced ships, we are all obligated to do so. The stakes are too high for anything less.

#ThrowbackThursday to 40 years ago and the first-ever modular construction island superlift at Newport News Shipbuilding. This August 1984 photo shows the island for US Navy aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (#CVN71) being lifted into position on the flight deck after being built separately – a method that saves significant time. The islands for earlier aircraft carriers were constructed on the flight deck. CVN 71 – the fourth Nimitz-class carrier built by NNS shipbuilders – is the first aircraft carrier built using modular construction.

Enterprise (#CVN80) Ship’s Sponsors Simone Biles and Katie Ledecky are preparing to compete for gold in Paris with Team USA. Take a look at this special message to our ship’s sponsors from a few of the shipbuilders working to bring the US Navy aircraft carrier to life at Newport News Shipbuilding. Good luck to Simone, Katie and the rest of the American athletes from all of us at NNS!

I had an opportunity today to spend some time with Newport News Shipbuilding’s summer interns. Their enthusiasm, fresh perspectives and innovative ideas are inspiring. As we continue to modernize and transform our business, we look forward to putting their thoughts and ideas to work. I’m grateful these students chose to spend their summer with us and wish them the best in the upcoming school year. Hopefully this summer internship is a step toward a fulfilling career in shipbuilding!

Take a look at this time-lapse video to see Newport News shipbuilders rig and install a 200,000-pound generator on US Navy aircraft carrier Enterprise (#CVN80). Like all Gerald R. Ford-class aircraft carriers, CVN 80 will be equipped with four emergency generators that provide backup power. Thank you to all of the shipbuilders involved in this process!

  • We are proud to share that we have completed contracted work at the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site, part of the Naval Nuclear Laboratory (FMP), in West Milton, New York. NNS provided maintenance services and led the refueling overhaul of a nuclear reactor prototype at the Kesselring site, a research and development facility that supports the U.S. Navy's Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program. Newport News Shipbuilding has completed refueling overhaul work at the Kenneth A. Kesselring Site – part of the Naval Nuclear Laboratory – in West Milton, New York. NNS assumed responsibility for maintenance on nuclear reactor prototypes at the facility in 2012. Since then, thousands of shipbuilders have supported this critical work, both in Newport News and in New York. The work of Kesselring shipbuilders furthered NNS’ already proud legacy of supporting the US Navy’s Nuclear Propulsion Program. With the completion of our commitments at Kesselring, the facility is positioned to train U.S. Navy nuclear operators for years to come. Thank you to every shipbuilder who has supported this important work through the years. I invite you to watch this message from Mary Cullen, NNS’ vice president of Nuclear Propulsion.

  • We welcomed Rep. Bobby Scott, Rep. Rob Wittman and a delegation of Australian Parliamentarians to the shipyard on Friday. The visit was in support of the trilateral Australia, United Kingdom and United States (#AUKUS) partnership, which HII continues to support. While at NNS, the delegation engaged with our team to learn more about HII’s nuclear-powered submarine sustainment expertise, supply chain management experience and longstanding industry-leading workforce development efforts.
